720P makes it awfully tough to read license plate numbers (DR650GW-2CH/FHD-HD)


I just pulled a random clilp from my PC, luckily I can read 720p plates ok. The back glass is tinted too.

Frame Rate = 30 FPS
Data Rate = 8 Mbs
 
But depending on your vehicle, the rear overhang (trunk) is usually much shorter than the front (hood) so cars can and do get closer, so you get more detail.
 
You may need to do the camera focus thing that the 550 needed,.
