I would like my DVR to record any nearby movement by humans overnight. There should be nobody near my car at night but me, so if anyone is on my property, I want to know.

Currently the MOTION DETECTION option on the DVR is OFF.

What are the pros and cons of enabling it?

needs permanent power which obviously impacts your battery if not driving the vehicle regularly

What kind of impact would that have, say, overnight? Wattage?

Wouldn't the unit's battery be able to power it overnight?

Parking mode?

When you stop the car, the unit powers down.

Do you then have to manually power it up to get motion detection to work?

Does it not draw from the unit's battery?

Remember, the car's 12V jack is now off (in most cars).

From the examples I have seen on Youtube of the motion detection abilities of these cheap DVR cameras, don't bother.

They need some serious movement, such as a flouro painted thief doing Gangnam Style on the bonnet, to actually activate the recording.

If it's just to record movement around the house I would suggest buying a purpose designed security camera or a game trail camera.

My 2 cents worth.

Cheers :) Mario

Thanks, Mario, that's what I suspected.

The DVR's manual is extremely vague on this function ... looks like it was more of a sales gimmick than a real feature.

yes, for parking mode it would need to be on

Not possible in most cars.

majority of cars cig power is wired to accessories yes, requires rewiring, wire in another socket or use of something like a power magic pro which also has low voltage cutoff protection

I'm just puzzled that the unit does not simply run on its battery. :?:

I thought someone said that it does, but only for a few hours ......

a few hours would be generous, doubt it would do anywhere near that on batteries
