This model Hawkeye X800 I saw first time in october 2013 when it was first released. Back then it was too expencive ( retail 140-200 usd ), now price on Chinese market came down to 79usd.







It has quite unique design and its probably world smallest dashcam with LCD and rotatable lens from point of view of "footprint" it leaves to outside, if your car has rearview mirror sun-shade, it can be mounted behind it the way that only lens part will be visible to outside, "footprint" about 1 x 1 inch ( 2.5 x 2.5 cm ).






X800 can be connected to external LCD display ( for example your car multimedia headunit ) and can be operated via remote control. Which means if X800 is fully hidden behind rearview mirror and its hard to access buttons, you still can operate it via remote control, adjust settings, make video playback etc.



Camera lens can be rotated 360 degree. In case it mounted fully behind rearvie mirror, then of course can not record inside car, but still it will allow to record side action to left or right from the car ( all depends on your car rearview mirror design / mount / arm length etc.

Actually this daschamera is not Chinese design, originally it comes from Korean Honeywell.
Chinese R&D ( remember and duplicate ) slightly changed Honeywell HBB-200HD design and made X800.
Honeywell has no LCD, only 720p and can rotate only 180 degree.

It is nice to see a creative, common sense and logical approach to new dash cam design. So many dash cameras on the market have such poor form for function. Many, like the new G90 as just one example look like shrunken down point & shoot pocket cameras rather than products designed specifically for this purpose.

Honeywell HBB-200HD has been out for over 2 years ( I nearly bought one back then ), so now its kinda already old-style for me. Glad to see that some Koreans think differently and can create more user-friendly / practical product design

Thanks Niko. What about firmware? Sometimes here on DCT there's been discussion about some units being delivered with firmware that is only for the Chinese market, usually meaning GPS but also other settings I think.

This one does not have gps. GUI is multilanguage, incl English.

It uses AIT CPU. About sensor I have to refresh my memory.

Lens aperture on this is quite good F2.0, which is used on most high-end dashcams

( NB! Yes, some products having F1.8 or even F1.6, but not always larger aperture means the better lowlight, - it's all depends on how good quality lens used and how good is firmware tuned up. Some cheap F1.6 are worse than high quality F2.0-2.4 )

Bit-rate is 12Mbps, like on many NT96650 models, so I guess developer can rise it up to 15Mbps if somebody from resellers will decide to stock some MOQ.

X800 uses Taiwanese AIT8427D, Alpha Image Technology. This sensor has been made specially for CAR DVR.

Their website shows AIT8427, but X800 uses AIT8427D. Dont know what "D" means, - probably advanced ?

AIT is not that widely used on dashcam market like Ambarella or Novatek, but I had 3 AIT dashcams in my life. Two of them I was happy. If firmware tuned up properly, then result is good.

Last year september-october I pointed out to @FoxOffer about this model, but retail price back then would be up to 200 usd. Thats why it didnt catch up back then.
Maybe now with lower prices they will be ready to sell it on their shop or as one-time-deal they can help to buy it for you ? Talk to them.

I really like the design but I'm not sure I would race in and buy one just yet. It seems like in maybe six months or so we should finally be seeing many new worthwhile A7 models come onto the market. Who knows, maybe even the mythical GuardTrak may appear.

Edit: With the size, price and remote control, the Hawkeye seems like it might have potential as a rear camera, no?

For rear cam best practical design at the moment I think is Mobius, Innovv.

I meant "rear" as using to record inside car. For sure it could be used in taxis. I will edit my previouse "rear"-writing, my bad Enlg.

For that use might be suitable although mounting location not always ideal for inside cam use

I was actually responding to dashmellow who I think was meaning for rear window use, I suspect it would be too obtrusive for that
