70mai A810

70mai A810

The 70mai A810 is a dual channel Chinese manufactured dash cam released in Aug 2023. It is an evolutionary upgrade in the A800 4K series of dash cams and includes some improvements over the previous A800S. The 2 main improvements are the usage of a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor for the front camera and the introduction of optional 4G cloud capabilities.

The 70mai A810 is based on the Novatek NT98529 processor. It uses a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 CMOS sensor for the front camera. While you can purchase the A810 as a single channel cam, it is typically sold as a dual channel cam and comes with the Midrive RC12 rear camera.

Rear Cameras

The A810 works with a variety of 70mai rear cameras as per the table below:

Video Quality

When used as a single channel camera, the A810 records 2160p (4K) video at 30fps with an average bitrate of 31 Mbps. Video quality for the front camera during the day is very good and night quality is good. Once you connect a rear camera to the A810, the front camera frame rate drops from 30fps to 25fps. While not significant, the video is less smooth at the lower frame rate.

When used as a dual camera, the rear camera records 1080p video at 25fps with an average bitrate of 8 Mbps. The video is good during the day but below average at night with a grainy quality. Poor quality rear camera recording has been one of the drawbacks with all 70mai cameras and unfortunately this trend continues with the A810.

Features

The 70mai A810 has the same wedge shaped form factor and size as the A800 and A800S cameras measuring in at 88 x 60 x 36mm.

70mai A810 Dimensions

The wedge shaped form factor allows for discreet mounting but we would have preferred a black lens for a more stealthy look. The camera can be mounted directly to the windshield or on a provided electrostatic sticker. The electrostatic sticker allows you to remove the camera from the windshield without leaving any residue. The camera cannot swivel to record interactions at the driver or passenger windows. Overall build quality of this camera is quite good, similar to previous 70mai dash cams.

The A810 maintains many of the same features as previous versions including a large 3″ screen, g-sensor and built in GPS. The camera comes with WiFi and supporting apps for Android and iOS. Unfortunately the A810 only supports 2.4 GHz WiFi while the older A800S supported both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi. This leads to slower download speeds.

The A810 comes with audio, screen and LED error notifications. It also has Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) built into the camera. Most owners find this feature annoying and typically turn it off.

One negative is that the camera uses a 500mAh battery instead of a capacitor which is not ideal in hot climates. The battery uses a plugin connector which makes it easy to change if it ever dies. No soldering is required if you purchase a direct replacement battery from sites like Aliexpress.

Parking Mode, Hardwire Kit and 4G

If you would like to use the 70mai A810 for parking mode you will need to purchase a hardwiring kit from 70mai. There are 2 compatible kits available:

  1. 70mai UP03 Hardwire Kit – this enables parking mode only
  2. 70mai UP04 4G Hardwire kit – this enables parking mode and 4G cloud capabilities (requires a SIM card and data plan)

With the hardwire kit installed, the following parking mode options are available:

  1. Motion Detection – records 30 second video when motion detected. With 4G installed, you will receive a notice on the app
  2. Impact Detection – records 30 second video when impact detected. With 4G installed, you will receive a notice on the app
  3. Timelapse – continuous recording at 1 frame / second. Note this is not uploaded to the cloud

Beyond the 3 parking modes above, the optional 4G solution provides:

  1. Cloud Storage for 15 days with a max of 50 videos
  2. Remote video monitoring up to 30 minutes. Can also adjust settings remotely
  3. Parking Lot Search – determine location of vehicle in a parking lot and real-time monitoring on a map

Support

70mai support outside of China is not the greatest. However they do create firmware updates for their cameras to fix bugs and enable new capabilities which is a positive. 70mai provides a 12 month warranty, which is standard for most dash cams.

Should I Purchase

If you are looking for a good bang for your buck 4K camera, the 70mai A810 is a decent option as it is one of the most affordable dash cams using a 4K Sony STARVIS 2 Sensor. Also the availability of cloud features as an option is impressive.

Be aware of a few drawbacks. The A810 also uses a lithium battery instead of a super capacitor and the non-buffered parking modes are not great. Also the RC12 rear camera does not have the best video quality. That being said, the A810 is an overall great value given the excellent video quality at this price point.
