Being as my G1wh have been so cheep, cheerful, reliable and way up to the job -

I decided to have a go at the dual sim cheep mobile phones as this rather suited me and to unlock on old phone I had was going to be £20.

So I parted with my £76 for a 5 inch dogs danglies android - and...

Amazingly it looks and feels great, works like a charm and I can forgive the odd storage GB quoted and missing, the odd milli amps missing from battery capacity which isn't a problem for me !!! Not found a thing it wont do yet.

money well spent... I guess time will tell as it has with my couple of g1wh - hopefully

This is a good day - another really good word/phrase I learned. That's two today. 😀

Do you have a link?

I've been tempted to buy a Chinese android, but just can't quite bring myself to do it. Reliability and spyware are my biggest concerns.

I've been using a Lenovo A820 for over a year. Excellent dual sim phone. Flashed it with a Lambda ROM, which made it even nicer to use. Recently passed it on to my girlfriend, as I was given a Samsung for Christmas.

I would stick to respected brands like Lenovo. Buy locally. But it's safer to get a deal on a Samsung or HTC, etc phone that's recently been replaced by a newer model, so is being sold off at a heavily discounted price.

These days 100 usd unbranded phone is practically same quality built and performance as "branded" 200-250usd phones.
I had 5y ago one of a kind 3 SIM cards non-smartphone ( 2 SIM active, 1 stand-by ).
Now waiting when good quality 3 SIM ( all active ) smartphone will out. Really hate carrying few phones in a pocket.

If i was waiting for a phone and not waiting for the time i can ditch the one i carry now it would be.

Foremost with a screen i cant break ( as i undestand it the most common smartphone problem )
And second with a OS install thats not fillled with a lot of apps and widgets i will never use.
I dont need hyper grafiks and Mega HD screen and camera, allso dont need quad or octa core processor.
Just need a durable phone that i can talk and text on, and read my mails, and maybe read a little news and check the weather forcast/radar.

100 dollars sound fine to me.

Im so happy i only get and need to make 4-5 phonecalls a week 🙂

I was using a Cubot X6 for a while - the battery just dies randomly now though so it didn't last that long.

I've got the Android 4.4 release on there, but it doesn't support the camera module in my older PCB version, for the price it's brilliant!

The only thing I really miss is the oleophobic coating that a lot of phones have which keeps fingerprints to a minimum, other than that the only thing it lacked (which I actually really needed) was a TPM encryption chip as without that I can't use work email.

Work gave me a Nokia 635 last week so I'm quite liking the Windows phone environment - they're really limited in their apps compared to Android or iOS though.

I'm very interested to see what may happen with the upcoming Ubuntu Touch phone. "Scopes" sounds very interesting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_phone

The number of SIMs that will end up in these phones remains to be seen but........

edit: dual SIMs announced.

"With Ubuntu, the industry’s first fully converged device will be a high-end smartphone that can be docked to a monitor and keyboard to become a powerful desktop PC."

The Ubuntu Touch OS will be open source.

A smartphone that can be used like a mobile desktop computer could be a great combination with a dash cam.

Due early 2015.

never had a smart/data phone. Still using Treo 680.
And BLU makes some very cheap, unlocked android phones. $14 (stick/candybar) $40 (normal types) http://tinyurl.com/mvvaa4a
But, I am not clear that I interpreted the first post correctly...
What did you do? Just in a few words that is.
Bought an Android phone? How is this dash cam related? (G1W related?)

I guess @petepete is equating a cheap dash cam with a cheap phone but the post is indeed a bit confusing. Perhaps the title should have had the word smartphone in it?

exactly...like what sort of moron would tote an I phone 6 never needing or using the speed or quality and purely as a fashion/status statement - I manage both without without !!!!

In effect it cost £56 new as I would have had to unlock a used phone for the £20....

its for my lad for school....

anatutu bench mark is 17900 and that is enough to play all games he wants, browse as fast as my computer and run what ever apps he needs on a smart clear screen - Its the first thing I ve made him pay for and I m hoping he will look after it having parted with his own money ...

It is everyone's privilege and choice to buy a cheap phone or cheap dash cam but not everyone would characterize others who buy iPhones as "morons" or status conscious fashionistas. Be that as it may, a great many people buy the iPhone platform for Apple's particular skills with it's technology, it's highly integrated OS and all the capabilities it embodies along with the broadest selection of apps of any competing platform.

As for the cost, you can get an iPhone 5C for FREE with a two year contract from any of a number of well known providers. In the UK you can order an unlocked SIM-free pay-as-you go iPhone also for free.

I think phones like the OnePlus One and the Xiaomi Mi4, amongst others are very promising. Though now that Microsoft is financing Cyanogenmod, I'm not as hopefully for one of my favorite ROMs. I paid $150 for my Galaxy S5 on a two year plan and have rooted it, yet am still restricted by a locked bootloader. At least I can swap networks and SIMs if I want. I like the ability to buy my phone outright and use it as I want.

Here in the US if you have a 2 year plan, you have to pay taxes and fees on your plan each month and that amounts to a lot of money, however if you have a prepaid plan you don't. So $60 gets you unlimited calls and text plus 2 GB of data without having to pay all the extra taxes and fees. You can pay cash at the store kiosk and not have any credit checks or nonsense associated with 2 year contracts.

Yeah, the free phone is like getting a free razor and then having to pay too much money for the blades!
I'm a pay-as-you go guy myself. In fact, I carry a dumbphone, along with an iPad mini and this works well for me.

I need a smartphone only for communicating with Mexico. When that changes I may rethink it if I'm not too spoiled by then.

This one developed a fault in the touch sense bottom right of the screen and has been returned - sensible to buy from uk supplier.....

on the other hand this one can now be found for £65 and has an amazing battery life, good gps , strong 3g in our very weak signal drop area, plays all games apps etc and is only let down by a an average camera that you can forgive it simply because there is something unexplainable about it that makes you love it !!

This is allso why i am in no hurry ( along with beeing broke ) to update my dashcams.
I dont feel even the top of the line new dashcams is superior in image quality compared to my Lukas/mobius combo, okay some/many are better for sure but not in a way where i can justify spending money on it as things are for me at the moment.
What intrest me most these days is the general shape of the new dashcams, and offcourse allso the new technology and features.

Okay i do have a crush on the X1/SGZC12RC, i would just love to try that one out in a some what modified state on my rifle scope 😀 allso wish i was able to get it to go into B&W mode like cctv cams do when it get low light.
If the tax man is kind to me this year i might have to pick up a X1/SGZC12RC to play with, and if my playing dont work it will make a good replacement for the mobius in the rear of my car.

The best deal I've found is from Consumer Cellular if you're not a 'power user' that lives on their phone 24/7. I'm paying $34/month (including taxes) for 2 lines and it includes more data than I need. The program is set up so if your needs go up/down you can change the plan as needed without penalties or extra charges. You do have to buy your own phone but even factoring in that it's much cheaper ($34/month vs $119/month) than what I was paying for service from any other provider.
