I have spent the better half of the last month testing one of 70mai's latest releases, the A800SE 4G. Read on to find out my conclusion regarding this new entry in 70mai's A8xx stable.

70mai 4K A800SE 4G (GalaxyCore GC8613, GalaxyCore GC2053, Wi-Fi 6, 4K front + 1080p rear, HDR)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Firmware: v1.1.38ww. The firmware version loaded from the factory onto the device was v1.0.35ww, and during the testing period I received only the one update to take the device to it's current state of v1.1.38ww.

App for testing: Android version v4.0.1, obtained from Google Play Store.

The verdict:

70mai finds itself in an interesting position with the 4K A800SE 4G. Even though this is using a 'lesser-than-usual' image sensor in the GalaxyCore GC8613, it is still a very competent performer. This dashcam is a step-up from the bottom model, the A810 Lite, in terms of it's rear image sensor and build quality. While the dashcam performs strongly in just about every task, it finds itself in a difficult position in terms of product differentiation. In terms of 70mai's offerings, the 4K A810 Lite provides a lot of value at a lesser price point, while for those wanting the best image quality could step up to the 4K A810S.

While you can't go wrong with the 4K A800SE 4G, it risks finding itself being the unwanted middle child in the 70mai A8xx line-up.

My nitpickings:
  • Slow Wi-Fi 6 download speeds, as it lacks the 5GHz band
  • Unfortunately misses out on the newer models firmware additions, such as granular voice control and HDR timer
  • I have alluded to this before: 70mai risks diluting the product line-up by having so many A8xx series models now at this stage

The positive:
  • Even though there is a GalaxyCore and not Starvis 2 sensor on-board, 4K video footage is still very clear and detailed
  • Rear image sensor quality is solid for the price
  • Integration with the UP04/UP05 4G hardwire surveillance kit for parking monitoring at this price point is a very strong win
  • HDR performance and heat dissipation is fantastic
