A229 Pro - Why does it constantly switch on "recording" when I'm using the VIOFO phone app?

I'm the proud new owner of a A229 Pro (my first dashcam!)
The members here have been terrific helping me learn dashcam basics and to help me decide which model fit my needs.

The following VIOFO app behavior perplexes me:

I disable recording, connect to WIFI, open the VIOFO app, and go into "settings".
The A229 Pro then starts "recording" even thought this is not what I want.
I purposely disable recording before I go into the app. All I want to do when I use the app is either change settings or download a file. No recording needed.
I manually disable "recording" but it keeps getting turned on while I'm playing around in the app.

Why would I want to record while using the app? That's great that it has that capability, but it would be preferable if it recorded only when commanded.
I'm a little OCD at file management and I end up with useless files.
