It appears that trying power the camera down by using the app's power button can crash the camera. As I reported elsewhere, the camera has refused to power down after trying to power the camera down from the app. Once this happens, the power button no longer works. Disconnecting an external battery no longer powers down the camera. The only solution is to pull the battery.
Given my camera's ...um... irregular behavior, would others try this experiment: connect the camera to a computer with the USB cable. Use ext. power or mass storage options, it won't matter which, and let the camera warm up for at least 30 minutes. Disconnect the camera and then power the camera back up (external battery if possible). Connect it to the app with WiFi. Start recording video. Use the power button on the app screen to try to power down the camera. My guess is the camera will lock up and only pulling the battery will drop power.
