Camera with separate hard drive or similar?

I've recently purchased a Blackvue 650.

There are some issues.

Is any camera manufactured with separate recording capability, ie not in the mounted camera but else where in the vehicle where size is not such an issue ?

If not surely this would be a better option and capable of far more memory and facilities than struggling with micro sd capability????

I don't have a Blackvue camera so can't give you any specific detail, lots of info here on them and their nuances already though
