Lately there has been too much nation bashing. DashCamMan set a new rule a few weeks ago and now @Nigel has been banned for one week for continuing to speak unkindly of some of his neighbors. One of the things that I think makes this forum so great is that we have members from across the globe. What a diverse group with diverse ideas, and definitely diverse driving conditions. Hopefully we can continue to talk about what we have in common and share our different ideas.

I wonder how many cultures and places are represented here.

didn't know about the ban but can see why it could happen, constant bashing wears thin after a while

I think for the most part everyone is pretty well behaved here, I'm always mindful that we do get people here that are ESL and may not always be able to communicate clearly, with a diverse mix of people and cultures there's no place for spelling and grammar comments and the like

While an unfortunate big step, I commend DashCamMan for taking it to ensure that everyone continues to feel welcome. There is no doubt this is a great group

ESL, - English as a Second Language ?

yeah sorry, ESL is English Second Language, it's a common abbreviation used here

No problem, it's good to learn something new every day, and Google helps with it.

I think a lot of it was baseless is the issue, mention the USA and it turned into a gun rant etc for no good reason

I may have missed some but my count is 68 countries.

The PanAmerican Games being held in Canada in July will consist of 40 countries.

Pano Ammo ? 😀 Been that way since i saw National lampoon european vacation 😛

Audrey wants to go home, and she want to fly pan am but have little language skills 🙂

The gun issue is only one aspect of Nigel's apparent disdain for the USA which he has been expressing at regular intervals since he first arrived on DCT but negative stereotypes and ill-informed notions about firearms in America have come up quite a lot here on DCT and they just don't belong. Insulting stereotypes and disparaging statements regarding certain cultural differences have been expressed towards other nations as well. Additionally, disparaging remarks towards certain ethnic and religious groups, both overt and subtle have also been creeping into DCT and clearly that sort of thing doesn't belong here either.

said part 'bout stereotypes: media "serve" ( ? ) them. They are used to get quotas...
"over here" (Switzerland) it is terrible right now... Everywhere they are reinforcing stereotypes... (...Election-Year and ukrainian Conflict)

But I'm glad to see that there actually is a Board blocking People if they cross the frontier...

Just one point for ESL (thanks, now, I understand what this means... Took me only 10 years to find out 😉 Have to find my former Boss who often titled me "ESL" - I always thought he said "Esel" (Donkey/Jack..a....ss in German)...
But...

Think about those who are "ETL" (or further away... eg. me: English is my third foreign language... (I don't speak the second one ...well... but still) - theyr English might be worse than ESL's

In another forum I participate in we have a couple of members who are "NEL" (No English Language). They post using Google Translate (or some other comparable service). It sometimes makes for interesting conversations because the translations can be pretty funny at times and it can take multiple attempts to get things understood by everyone. 😀 I can't imagine how difficult it is for them.

we have a few members here that are NEL that use Google translate to communicate, some are quite regular contributors also

They must do a pretty good job because, to me at least, it's not obvious who they are - or I'm just not browsing the correct forums/sub-forums.

I can think of at least three members here who's English language skills have improved dramatically in the least year or so. It's been great to witness their progress.

Whenever I've tried Google Translate it sometimes really mangles what I'm saying but it has been serviceable enough for me to do business with people from all over the world on eBay when I've been a seller. To be fair, some languages work better than others but all in all the technology seems quite remarkable.
