Hi, I've had my 57 for just over two years and it's worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. While driving I noticed it wasn't on, and the unit was very hot. After it had cooled down it worked again. At that time I didn't know about the 12 second press to restart. I've used it again for a couple of days in hot weather and it was OK. Today though, not in hot sun, it stopped working again. I pressed the 'on' button for 12 seconds and it restarted and is working now on my laptop or on battery. The battery was at about 50% when I restarted, but has dropped quickly in swapping between laptop and power supply while I installed the software update to version 3.30. Any ideas? Thanks.

What memory card do you use?

Next time it happens, take the card out and look for "elog.json" file. It could have some detail why it is overheating.

Have you used that card for 2 years? I would expect it to have worn out by now with the limited writes.

Thanks. Here's the contents of the file. Two system errors, 2.90 low battery and 3.00 data abort. Are they relevant?

No the card is only a few months old. I can try swapping it for another one later.

Hi, I've had my 57 for just over two years
I would expect that to be the end of life for the battery, time for a new one.

Unfortunately, they haven't made it very user replaceable, but it is possible without a soldering iron:

(Not recommending this company, but they do have a decent video.)

Next time, get a dashcam with a super-capacitor instead of a battery!

Ah. Didn't think of that. Thanks for the vid.

I wouldn't worry about low battery shutoff item. The fact that it was logged indicates that the camera was aware of the condition and shut down gracefully. Data abort could indicate bad card. Try reformatting (in camera/app) before replacing.

Thanks everyone. I have to do a few hours driving over the weekend so I'll try a new card and report back when I know more.

I've had four or five hours of driving each day over the weekend, with a new card in the Garmin. And it's worked fine. Even with getting baking hot when I left it in the car in the sun, far hotter than it was when it stopped working before. So it looks like it probably was the card. Thanks for everyone's replies and suggestions.
