I'm concerned, that with privacy mode and some bad luck nothing will be left recorded in case of an accident

I wish the manual would provide more and clearer information about the length of the video files and what happens when a video file is locked, either by the g-sensor or manually.

Video length, quote from the manual:
Under loop recording: Time frame for each video file is 1 / 2 / 3 / 5 / 10 minutes.

... and further down it says, the default is 1 minute. (There is still no mention in the manual of the privacy mode, that limits the length to 1 min!)

So supposed, the length is set to 1 min. Now there is some incident at exactly 59 sec of the active frame. Am I correct that the past 59 (uninteresting) sec + 1 sec are saved and locked and the following seconds not?

I am living in Germany and have to use the privacy mode, that is only saving two loop files max., so I might have saved the last second after the incident and when the camera keeps recording and I fail to continue pressing the lock button, there is almost nothing left for me recorded of the incident.
And you have the same situation, when the incident occurs exactly at the beginning of a new file. I might have saved the moment after a crash, but not the important seconds before it, so I can't see and show, what led to the accident.
Therefore I'd suggest that pressing the video protect button (or triggered by the g-sensor) depending where in the current frame the incident occurred (1st half or 2nd half), the previous or following clip should be saved as well.

And what about photos? There is a folder DCIM/Photo. When are photos taken? According to the manual only, when the voice command "Take Photo" was issued.

Sorry you have to live with those laws.

Is there a setting called Privacy Mode on your VS1, in the app? I recall it being only available on a custom firmware, but that might have been last year.

I believe there is some logic on VIOFO cameras where if it is close to the end of a segment, it locks the previous one as well.

Perhaps 10 minutes would be most suitable?

With the Privacy Mode, there will be two one-minute normal videos. But there is no limitation for the locked videos that are saved manually or because the G-sensor is triggered. If the incident occurs at 59 sec, the camera will lock current clip and next clip as designed. For the photo, the photo is saved at the same time when the G-sensor is tiggered.

Yes, I see the option "Datenschutzmodus". Firmware is V1.1_250115.
Maybe it is only available, when language is set to German.

Today I learned Portugal, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Germany have strict rules on saving dashcam videos.

This is a huge misfortune.

There shouldn't be any surprises about what a security camera does and when.

In other words, the manual should include all available features and warnings. If new features or changes occur over time, there should be new manuals and information on the update page, even if they're not printed.

I dream of a dash cam that works perfectly without requiring the user to ask questions.
Unfortunately, when we're supposed to be using the camera, the camera is using us.

Dashcam world is definitely imperfect, like basically all tech purchases.
How does the camera use you?

... when the G-sensor is tiggered.

By the way, it should rather be g-sensor than G-sensor (also wrong in the manual).

G (capital letter) is the gravitational constant and g (lowercase letter) is the acceleration due to gravity.
The sensor is triggered by acceleration.
I would say that g-sensor is still wrong, as it is generally not triggered by acceleration due to gravity (but only if the car falls off a bridge 🙂).
The formula symbol for acceleration is "a", so to be precise the sensor should actually be called a-sensor.

If the incident occurs at 58 seconds @VIOFO-Support, what will happen?
The logic is same as locking videos in normal mode:

Thanks, that important information should definitely go into the user manual.

Can you confirm, that it also/still works this way with privacy mode (Datenschutzmodus) enabled?

Well they fixed that as shown in the diagram. They should get back to you soon on if it happens in Privacy mode too.
