Do you have to purchase a Vantrue micro SD card for a Vantrue dash cam or can you use any type of sd card?
Vantrue cards seem extremely expensive compared to all the good makes that I use in my home security cameras?

You don't have to.
What Dasan are you using?
My answer is focused on 2k and 4k units.

Check other dashcam brands see if they are cheaper and get that. Eg viofo 70mai

Cctv camera i have around my house are using Samsung 128GB cards but they won't last a day in a 4K Dashcam and are usually two slow for 2k units.

Vantrue will flag the card as slow and if that happens while you are on the road you can kiss your recordings being constant.

Also note that the media is reporting that memory prices are going up apparently due to Ai server farms. I don't know if that affects micro sd cards too but worth checking.

Perhaps @Jeff_Vantrue can through some light on the pricing.
Thanks Wendy.

I would recommend purchasing a Vantrue Card to ensure a trouble free experience. You don't have to use a Vantrue card, but it's specifically designed to work with their cameras.

You don't have to, but we only recommend Vantrue SD cards or SanDisk Max Endurance series for the best performance and reliability.

Looking at getting a Vantrue S1 pro max

At the very least, you want a high endurance memory card that meets the speed requirements for your dash cam. Beyond that, it is likely the recommended card uses less power and therefore generates less heat than most cards on the market. Too much heat can cause some dash cams to shut down, or malfunction.

Memory cards i have tested with the vantrue top model S1pro max system.

Trancend Ultra performance - black silver - OK
PNY XLR8. white red - OK
Kingston Canvas Go plus. - black blue ( GEN 3 ) - OK
Sandisk extreme plus. gold red - OK
Lexar professional. grey - Black - OK
PNY PRO Elite - grey black - OK
Adata Premier pro. black green - OK
Adata high endurance. - black red - OK
Kingston canvas select plus. Black ( GEN 2 ) - OK
Samsung PRO ultimate. Black - OK
Samsung PRO Plus U3 - blue - OK

In my testing of various Vantrue systems over the years i would be lying if i said they are memory card fussy, but of course one must always be careful here, and also buy card from reputable seller and not cheapest place online.

Also note my testing of memory cards are not long term of course, but the camera will easy fill up 1 time and often also 2 times before i replace it.
It is a good idea to in camera format the card now and then, many new cameras have a build in reminder for this very thing.

Consider purchasing it in a kit as they drop the price when things are conbined.

Here's an example. Not the pro max.

S1 Pro Max is 4k front and 4k Rear. A much better choice but more expensive. The S1 Pro Max 4k and 2.5k is also a great choice. You'll need to use an adhesive pad to attach the hinges together on either one of these units due to camera design. Otherwise, these are solid, reliable, and fantastic quality units.

Would a u3 card from any of the above be a quicker card?

Yes. U3/ V30 faster cards.
V30 mean 30 MB/s but if you read the specs of memorycards with that brand they will say 130 - 180 MB/s speeds, so the 30 MB/s i think is the rock bottom speed you can expect, of course wit things like this the types and kind of files you move also have a say.

The A rating A1 / A2 is the IOPS the card will handle, so not a absolute necessity to have a A2 card

You can read up on what all these different memory card classes are / mean, many places on the internet.

I have just adopted the first memory card of the new slightly faster kind ( not the very fastest though as they are not supported in dashcams yet, these new ultra fast cards support R/W speeds well over 500 MB/s )

But these new cards have R/W speeds above 150 MB/s or there about.
The first of those i gotten is the Sillicon Power Inspire card ( yellow & black ) R/W = 170 MB/s and 150 MB/s for that one.
Not much luck with previous two SP cards i have, but so far the Inspire have worked in any system i have put it in, so encouraging. ( 70mai A810S and currently in the S1ProMax )

Next card i pick up will probably be the Sandisk Creator. R/W speeds = 190 / 130 MB/s

I might also pick up one of the new GEN 3 Kingston canvas select plus cards, these cheap cards have always been good to me in gen 1 and 2 from years back.
Also looking at Lexar professional sliver plus to add to my test suite.

I read somewhere that a high endurance card would be better for using in Parked mode but I guess there isn't much difference in prices whatever card I get for my dash cam

Yes high endurance cards often recommended, and i also have a couple of those.
Their down side is they often have a lower write speed, and at least once they did also carry a premium price.

My collection of cards are generally centered on the cheaper stuff on the market here in Denmark.
But it could be in the long run a endurance card is better, my use of these cards are too fragmented to be able to compare the lifespan of my endurance cards VS ordinary memory cards.

Also i am not super focussed on parkig guard use / performance, but i do use it, ideally on a 3 hour timer as that is all i need for my out on town stuff, and at home / most places i come there is CCTV and also in some cases a reduced chance of problems while parked.
Like my friends place, it is private property in the form of a little decommissioned farm, there are 2 big dogs, and most days also one or more people shooting there, and old school people with anger issues.

My collection od old dead cards, will be very good 100 M targets at the range.

I have older / smaller cards too, often i use then to move a new firmware to a dashcam

Once a card is fast enough, there is no benefit for using a faster card in a dash cam. The dash cam writes at a constant speed. The read speed is pretty much irrelevant since that is something you will seldom need to do. If your memory card reader is limited to USB 2.0 ("High Speed"), you will get at best around 20 MB/s read speed. If your card reader is USB 3.0 (super speed), then your read speed will be limited by the card, and not the reader (usually about 150 MB/s)

Every dashcam has its compatible memory cards. Stick with what works per the above.
