Every 4-5 days I'll download the Mobius files in my PC. format the card and re install the FW.
Is re installing the FW is necessary after a card format?

no, formatting the card that often isn't either.

Formatting the card every 4-5 days is a good idea if you have used your camera a lot, but reinstalling the firmware is totally unnecessary and, taken to the limit, can do more harm than good. Only very, very rarely (read: never) do you need to reinstall the same firmware version.
Formatting the card ensures the file allocation table is cleaned up. Updating the firmware writes data to the card which is then transferred to the SPI and then deleted from the card. When updating the SPI there is always a very tiny chance that some data will not be transferred correctly.

Isoprop,
Thanks for confirming. I did that thinking the FW will also be erase and I have to install it again each time I format the card.
Camera is working beautifully. The more familiar with it the more I'm impressed with it's versatility.
Thanks

I can well understand that new owners of these cameras can become confused. Here are the answers to some common questions:

  • Pressing the reset button will restart the processor. The parameters will NOT be reset, neither the date and time nor the firmware will be affected.
  • The parameter settings are stored inside the camera in non-volatile RAM.
  • The firmware is stored inside the camera in a specialized chip (SPI).
  • A SYSCFG.TXT file in the card's root folder will be ignored by the camera when started normally. Special button presses are required if the SYSCFG.TXT parameters are to be loaded into the camera.
  • A SYSCFG.TXT file is not necessary or required if you use mSetup or Therau2000's Andoid app.
  • Both mSetup and Therau2000's Android app use direct USB communication to set the parameters. The card's file system is not used unless updating the firmware (mSetup).
  • You cannot update the firmware from a card formatted to exFAT (64GB cards and above).
  • If the internal battery is removed the data and time will be reset.
  • The camera requires a card be inserted for recording videos or pictures or setting the parameters.
  • The camera will output composite video (old low-resolution TV standard) during recording or while the camera is in standby mode. A special cable is required.
  • Using a special cable and an external monitor (or TV) it is possible to playback videos or photos from the camera. Recording at the same time is not possible.
  • It is not possible to use the camera in webcam mode and record at the same time.

If you view the card in a Mac, then format the card while in the Mac, will it then work properly in the Mobius? Thanks

What about loop recording?

What about loop recording?
It's always good to format the card. The more files written to the card, the more chance the FAT will be messed up. I can't give you an answer on how often you should format your card. It will most likely also depend on how well the card's controller software was written. I format my cards every time I copy the files to my PC. If you have loop recording enabled you should also check your cards from time to time. That's a good time to format it as well.

Have never heard of a read only card reader and I've done card reader business before, it's a new one to me

I have heard of read only card readers for commercial applications, but not at a consumer level.

After you install firmware does the firmware file get erased?

I would assume that when the card gets overwritten the firmware file would be deleted at that time anyway.
