Hi everyone! I've looked through the forum but didnt find anyone with this issue. Sorry if this is a repost.

I just got my mobius in the mail a few days ago and I'm running into an odd issue. Sometimes the camera fails to record anything, sometimes it starts recording but stops sometime during a ride and sometime (rarely) it records the whole trip without any issues. All the while the LED lights are blinking just like they're suppose to, so there's no indication of whether the recording has stopped or not - all looks perfectly fine as if the recording is in progress.

I did replace the stock battery with this super capacitor if that makes a difference
I updated the firmware to latest version 2.10, formatted (more than once) an 8gb card inside the mobius though the mobius setup program, tried all kinds of variations of video formats/video sizes/frame rate combinations but no luck.

If anyone can shed some light on this issue, I'd be very grateful!

Thanks!

P.S. the camera also get very hot. I'm guessing it's expected judging by the external heat sinks, but it is quite hot!

The heat is normal, I suggest trying another sd card to rule out a card issue

What power source are you using?

I don't recommend installing the capacitor until the Mobius has worked reliably for a few days with the standard battery. Otherwise it may complicate troubleshooting...

Is loop-recording mode enabled? Have you tried a different micro SD card?

The camera body should not get hot, just the heat sink. Worry if the heat sink doesn't get hot.

The loop recording is enabled. I havent tried a different card yet, but I will (rexy suggested that too)! I'll post an update when I do. Thanks!

I ask because the Mobius needs a power supply of at least 1A output. A cheap power supply could cause issues

Card issues usually have an associated led pattern to warn you the camera isn't recording.

I just went and checked - the car charger provides 1A exactly.

I've also been browsing other threads and it may be that it's just my last clip that's not saving. Often I find my trip videos are cut short, and its possible that my shorter trips dont appear to be recorded at all because the last clip isnt being saved. Again, it's not happening consistently because I did have clips that are less than 5 minutes long saved out before. Do you think it maybe a super capacitor at fault?

As far as LED blinking - it's blinking as expected - steady blue light on/off cycle (I'm recording in mode 2). That's why it was a surprise to me to find videos not having been recorded/saved.

Ensure that 'Power Off Disconnect' is set to 'Immediate', otherwise the capacitor will be discharged before it has time to save the last file.

I think that did it! Thank you very much!

Important consideration is your Memory card! I see folks suggesting that y ou try a different card, but you need a very, high-quality card!
Remember that the Mobius records at about 18mbps. You need a card that writes at a speed of at least 20mbps. I had standard CL10 micro cards and would get all sorts of colorshifts, fragmented video and artifacts. I switched to Samsungs EVO cards and it was like night and day!

Remember, any system is only as strong as it's weakest link...

I have the same issue as OP, but I'm running on v1.17. The first journeys were recorded brilliantly in 3 minute clips and the final clip saved ok with the super capacitor and with power off set to immediate. I got about 1hr total footage on the micro SD card (not even half full), but from then on I have only been getting 2 second clips at the start and at the end of the journey. At power-on I would get the correct flashing orange LED (red on the back) to indicate recording. Then at some point this would go to orange/green/blue flashing LED.

I think it might be a power supply problem, because when I plug the mobius into a USB mains charger it records perfectly with both the super capacitor and the battery installed.

So, for the time being I've put the battery back in, re-formatted the SD card (which came from mymemory as a Kingston class 4 32Gb pack with the SD adaptor and USB adaptor) and I will pick through the potential problems with the power supply: 1. the 12V/5V hardwire box, 2. the right-angle adaptor that I am using, 3. the super capacitor, 4. firmware.

Anyone think of anything else?

Ya dump v1.17. It was the worst of the firmwares to date. Upgrade to v2.10

Did you test the card using h2testw.exe just to be safe?

Will test the card.

Is v2.10 stable enough for a newbie like me?

Yes very stable

Thanks will give 2.10 a go then. Card test came back ok (2.5 hours later).

Sorry for the long delay in responding. It turned out to be a power supply problem with the cheap 12-5V USB transformer unit supplying quite wild voltage swings. I also upgrade the firmware. All was ok after that.

It's good to know that your problem has been resolved. The Mobius Manual contained the solution...

"Only use a quality chargers capable of supplying 1000mA (1A) and a stable voltage of at least 5V. Low quality chargers may not be able to supply enough current and can lead to premature battery failure or, in the worst case, even destroy the camera."
