Dash Cam
none
Hello all,
Rich is my name from Brooklyn NY
No dash cam yet but looking to have one soon.

New to this forum. It looks like a swell site to glean tech info for a noob like me.
I wonder if anyone could assist me with info on the following project I'd like to install in my vehicle.
I would like to use a HD dash cam as a rear view back up camera.
I do not require audio. The camera would be hard wired to a tablet.
I'm considering the Mobius Action Cam and a HD Tablet, maybe Nexus 7. It displays 1080p which I want.
Would anyone know if the Mobius Accessory Cable [3 connector Dongle] could be modified to substitute a USB cable, for the yellow Video Out Composite cable? If so could it deliver HD video from the camera to the tablet ? Of course it would require a USB extension cable to reach the tablet at the vehicle's dashboard
If that could be accomplished I would connect the USB power cable to a longer additional USB cable from the dongle to a USB charger in the vehicle to power the camera.
I am not glued to the Mobius or the Nexus7, but definitely want 1080p.
Hope some Whiz Kid had the answer.

any video delivered via a composite output will only be SD resolution

Thanks for your reply. However I am wondering if you are familiar with the Mobius cam. I say that because the Usb port on the camera does furnish 1080p video, and the accessory cable connects directly to the cam's Usb out port. So if the composite cable is substituted with a Usb cable why should it not carry the video to the tablet?
I'm not saying it will, I don't know. But you may have misunderstood my question, or maybe are not familiar with the Mobius cam.
There is another possibility, the cam will operate as a web cam without any batteries. So by connecting a Usb cable to the cam and then directly to the tablet no [accessory cable] it could possibly work. Or am I missing something ? What do you think ?

if it was passing 1080p video out via USB it would have to be a component signal (red, blue, green connectors), composite signal is analogue (yellow connector) and is not capable of supporting anything higher than standard definition resolutions, even if it were providing a digital signal over USB (don't believe it has this capability) your tablet would need to be able to accept the same in, also unlikely

the webcam mode I'm not sure supports recording at the same time, don't know that it's at full resolution either, someone more well versed in the Mobius (there are quite a few here) will be able to advise

Here is a image of the cable with some notations.
FYI:The web cam mode does not allow recording

OK and thanks for your help.
Do you have any idea of what resolution the rca cable would pass ?

Yeah the AV output of the mobius is just SD, the mobius come from the hobby of Radio Controlled things, but it have allways been having the features that allow for it beeing used as a dashcam.

The AV output is intended for use in FPV ( first person view ) witch mean you control your RC vehicle at a distance via a video signal transmitted back to you.
The most optimal for viewing this signal is a pair of googles ( often by a brand called fatshark ) and these googles are allso just SD.
some ppl allso use a small LCD screen, and a fjew RC transmitters even have this LCD build into them.

Often a OSD is used on top of the video signal to display GPS heading - distance - voltages - altitude and so on.

When you are piloting somthing miles avay from where you stand its pretty good to have a lot of INFO, not least witch way is home 😀

I dont even think the fjew dashcams witch do have build in wifi transmit a HD signal, but i am guessing here as i never owned such a dashcam.

For a reversing camera you are far better off buying a dedicated one, this issue have allso been discussed often in here.

If your car allready have a large screen headunit it might allready be prepared for a reversing camera ( IE have a AV in plug ) but no matter the RES of the screen on that headunit i will bet it only accept a SD signal.

A dedicated reversing camera + a LCD screeen is allso pretty cheap, by a large factor compared to the high end dashcams.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I'm leaning a great deal from you and others. How about posting a photo of your aircraft ?

I actually dont have one myself, my friend have a phantom quadcopter he and i fly with a little. ( using fatshark FPV gear )
Would like to get one myself, but with my current situation i doubt i will ever be able to by anything that expensive again.

The FPV gear i do have i have used on a car, but since we mostly drive those little cars in a forrest i have gotten pretty bad range, so for now that gear is put on the back burner.

If you do a search in this forum with reversing camera as the key word i think you will find all the other threads where the pros and cons have been discussed.

Thanks again. Better luck, I do hope you have your own one day.
