I found that it did help a bit in my testing, contrast-wise it added some depth and clarity

Hi Milamber,
In order to better recognize license plates, certain algorithms and parameters, such as shutter speed and color adjustments, have been optimized for license plate recognition. As a result, the image may appear darker.

I had HDR on/off and CPL on when I submitted my footage which is on one of Vantrue's Instagram posts. Performed decently

I’m also wondering about this since I use the CPL filter and find the image quite dark in bright sunlight. I’m unsure whether this is due to the CPL filter or the PlatePix feature.

PlatePix does darken the image.
However it will greatly improve the plate capture.
I did a side by side comparison with the E1 Pro.(Same image sensor as the N4 Pro)
PlatePix always gave me a better result.

Here are some more E1 Pro screenshots that show the effect of PlatPix on vs off.
The first picture will always be the one WITHOUT PlatePix. 2nd image of the same car will have PlatePix enabled. CPL is on for both units.

Biggest difference. With PlatePix disabled it can barely be read.

These results continue to show that PlatePix is an excellent implementation to improve plate capture. The PlatePix image will be slightly darker.

On the E1 pro given to me i have HDR and PP on.
A darker footage do not worry me, it make no sense for a dashcam to resolve things you can not see with the human eye anyway.

Does PP basically crank up the shutter speed and mildly crank up the ISO as needed to compensate, but still trend on the side of slight underexposure? Are you all seeing instances where HDR on and PP off yields better results?

I haven't seen or read any official information on how it works. But when taking a look at the wheels of the oncoming cars, it does appear to have a faster shutter speed.

When PP was enabled, it always gave me better results. No matter if it's day or night. The screenshot from the night I linked above was with HDR enabled.

I was finally able to get some good night shots with the E1 Pro.

Since the E1 Pro uses the latest IMX678, I used other dashcams that have the same image sensor to compare them.
For the comparison I used:

• E1 Pro HDR on, PlatePix on
• E1 Pro HDR on, PlatePix off
• Viofo A329 HDR on
• Viofo A229 Pro HDR on

I selected 2 random cars on one camera and searched for the best frame for every camera.

A329 with HDR enabled on the left, E1 Pro with HDR on and PlatePix enabled on the right. Both times the plates can be directly identified.

I've quickly decided to disable PlatePix, as the contrast and colouring make it difficult to distinguish details, especially the colour of dark vehicles in the frame. If needed, I can still enhance the image manually for number plate recognition.
