I'd like to mount my camera as close to the rearview mirror as possible, mainly because I'd like to keep it stealthy. The area on the windshield around my mirror has a special surface (see pictures below)
Would mounting on a surface that's not plain glass cause the adhesive to fail?

It will be fine as long as you clean it properly first - remove all traces of oil/grease.
It might spoil the view if the lens can see it.

Directly behind the mirror might be good, central at the bottom of the dots.

the Dots are called Frits. and some Frits are different then others depending on the manufacturer of the glass. if the Frits are raised a suction cup may not stay long but a 3M type adhesive should work

I did it. With the 3M sticker it's just fine.

A nice install (y) You have space to remove the cam from the mount and to adjust the mirror too, which is how it should be
