Hello,

I've had a micro SD card fail in a dashcam for the first time. I think the dashcam might have been responsible, as it occasionally powers up with memory card errors whereas my other one of the same model doesn't. Up to now, I've just reformatted the card and carried on.

Anyway the dashcam powered up yesterday with its memory card error, and the 128Gb card is now showing as 1.86Gb with one file on it, called 'uupd.bin', 32768kb in size, dated 10/12/12. The card won't accept any formatting.

My web searches bring up a few mentions of 'uupd.bin' and reduced capacity in connection with card failures.
So I was just wondering: Is this some hidden partition on the card that's become visible? What is this uupd.bin file?

Thanks for any insights!

Have you tried cleaning the memory card contacts?

Memory cards do wear out with a lot of use in a dashcam, they can also get overheated.

You haven't given any information on the type/brand of memory card or dashcam...

Hi, it's an Integral 128Gb card and a Halfords HDC400 dashcam. The card operated just fine for some weeks when I swapped it into the dashcam. Maybe it was after all a poor quality counterfeit.

I was just curious about the technical aspect of a memory card failing, why it now shows a reduced capacity and this 'uupd, bin' file.

Testing the new Vantrue E1 PRO, with the latest memory card i have tested with the camera will at random times ask for a format of the memory card.
This particular model have worked in a slew of dashcams no problem, even systems with same front sensor as E1 but then + a rear camera.

So i have written this particular Adata card up as a " do not work "

I test with +12 different memory cards, and a fussy system these days might not like 2 of them, maybe 3 if it is really " bad "

PS: i do not have a integral card in my test suite.
