BOSTON — Boston police say a man apparently sleeping under a truck in the parking lot of a Goodwill facility was killed when the vehicle started to pull away and trapped him between the wheels.

Police Superintendent Bernie O’Rourke says the death reported at about 6 a.m. Friday in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood was an accident.

The victim’s name was not immediately made public but police say he appeared to be in his 50s. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the driver did not see the man under the trailer when he got in the cab and started to drive away.

The driver stayed at the scene at Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries.

O man 🙁

Its nearing the time of year where you can find homeless ppl where ever they can keep warm and dry.

Over here some have begun to install spikes where a homeless might bed down 😱

Sometime ago one company here tried to do that on the front of their building, allegedly because homeless people badgered the building visitors. Once it got national news coverage they immediately removed them.

several buildings in downtown houston have different types of deterrent on them. some of the railings around the flowerbeds and benches have small (1cm) metal ridges sticking up about every .5m or so - this is so skateboarders and BMXers can't grind/slide on them and tear them up, since the ridges would instantly stop their board/bike and hurt them. but they don't look weird like those spikes.

others have thin (0.5cm) metal plates sticking up from the front edge of low, long and wide windowsills, and they have a small sign that says "Do Not Sit".

Meanwhile several of the buildings with no deterrents often stink of urine (or worse) and i avoid those buildings. i try not to even walk on the sidewalk on that side of the street just because of the smell.

When I worked in a business near the skid row area of Denver, you sooner or later began to recognize a few of the 'regulars' on the street, and sometimes even got to know a few names.
One guy was a non-descript, 'typical' wino, small old guy in an old suit.
I kept a newspaper article about him for years.
He was sleeping in a dumpster behind one of the businesses, and the trash truck dumped him and the contents into the crusher, then deposited in the dump.
He survived that.
Later a bulldozer was pushing a pile of trash across the dump, and the driver saw an arm shoot out of the trash. He called for help and they dug him out.
This guy I remember would always ask you for a cigarette if you passed him on the street.
'Hey buddy, do you have a cigarette?"
That's also the first thing he said after they excavated him.

(Quoted in the paper)

He ended up in the hospital, and possibly got shuttled off somewhere for some 'help'. Don't remember seeing him again on the street.

The article also mentioned he was a decorated b-17 ball turret gunner from WW2.

I stopped parking in the alley behind the businesses since there was a restaurant on the block, and the winos would raid the dumpster, and use the surface of my hood as a picnic table. (leaving a mess)

Seems to be a problem in many cities. In Portland Oregon, some of the business in the wino district, installed small water sprayer nozzles into the wall about 1/2 meter above the sidewalk and have them set on a timer to spray for 20-30 seconds twice an hour, during the night. It seems to be very effective to rinse off the sidewalk and encourage the homeless to seek better locations. There are alternatives, as Portland has designated several homeless camps, set up under the bridges and a few other locations. A few of these homeless have become a problem being rather aggressive confronting people for money. Similar to being robbed. On the other side, there are a few charities that offer temporary apartments for moms or dads who have small children. Unfortunately there are several homeless that are mentally ill and need medical help, etc. In general, the city does just enough to hopes the issue does not get much news attention.

They're usually going to lurk where they have resources.

Around the same time as my earlier 'wino' story, the city bus system revamped the routes, and to increase ridership and educate the public about the new routes, had one month of free rides, anywhere you wanted to go.

Within weeks, winos, (Not really called homeless then) started showing up in the poshest areas, sleeping in nicer parks, rummaging through better dumpsters. The residents weren't happy. 🙂
