**** I will keep updating this thread in a day or so****

My V5000gs arrived safe and sound from the seller '4coolday' today. http://www.ebay.com/itm/251232783187?ss ... 1439.l2649

My initial impression overall is good. One thing I'm confused about is the "12pcs IR LEDs" I don't see them??? Im thinking they are hidden in the tinted ring around the lens but I've yet to see them. I really don't care if they're there or not, as I never use them. Also, this is the first cam that I have that uses a barrel type plug instead of a USB mini.

MENU:
The menu seems to be identical to my DOD carcam, with a few additions. Speed feature on/off - MPH or km/h - and some other settings I don't understand yet.

SIZE:
The size is about the same as the 027. I compared it to my GS9000 and its about half the length, but twice the height. So it's more of a square rather than a rectangle.

COLOR/FINISH:
I'm very pleased with the finish of this camera. I'm a stickler when it comes to this. I've painted / modified almost every camera I have to make it more 'covert'. This one has a semi-flat finish and everything is black. No shiny metal rings, no yellow cree LED bulbs, no shiny chrome plastic, no ..heck even the screws are black.

BUILD QUALITY:
Overall build quality seems to be good. The mount is strong, and very low profile, although I have not stuck it to the windshield yet, you can still tell that everything seems pretty solid. It locks into place pretty strong and the camera can only be released from the mount by pressing a lever.

I live in New Jersey (USA) and we are in the middle of a nor-easter right now so I have my beater truck home (which has a GS9000 in it already. I'm planning on putting this one in a different car but the mount on this camera is not a removable suction cup, its the 3M type tape so I can't move it from one car to another. I will post some videos and mounting photos once I install it.

If there are any close up pics of something specific you want to see let me know and I will post them.

Re: V5000GS Unboxed...

Thanks for sharing the pics. It seems bigger than I had expected when comparing it to the DVR-027. The 12 pc IR LED is strange. Unless those round rings light up, I don't see them (not that you are missing out on anything. Looking forward to the vids.

Re: V5000GS Unboxed...

Well, there is no way (in any of my vehicles anyway) to discretely mount this camera. It's size will not allow it to fit behind any of my rear view mirrors. It fits fine when the mount is off, but the mount makes it stand off the windshield too far. This may become an expensive rear camera. :x  :x

Re: V5000GS Unboxed...

The mount feels sturdy, but seems like its all over the place during playback. Quality seems on par with the rest of them. The GPS signal picks up fast, although the speed stamp is horrible. The font is way too wide and over pixelated. . . why can't anyone seem to get this right??? At least they were smart enough to put a black border around the numbers this time so they don't blend in with the sky like on the V2000GS.

Oh, and these files will playback on the datakam player, as does the V2000GS.

Here is a daytime sample video:

There was two manufacturers that had A7 product on show in Hong Kong last week that stated they were ready for mass production, didn't see this one, ours won't be ready until around August at this stage

I just want to see a superdashcam already. Something with A9 (4k at 30 fps) and a super lens. Something that films like a DSLR at night, with no noise at all :p

not sure that will be available anytime soon, market is progressing pretty quickly though so anything's possible

Wow... Not too fussy, I see. :p

That camera you're asking for is currently being used to film movies like the hobbit and iron man. Costs, somewhere in the tens of thousands of dollars/pounds.

Actually, GoPro Hero 3 Black already has the Ambarella A7 chip, and can shoot 4k at 15fps. At the moment, there are already 4 chips (launched) that can shoot 4k at 30 or 60 fps.

Also, în 2,7k and 4k mode, GoPro shoots at 45 or so Mbps bitrate.

15fps is arguably not good enough for most people. Storage space would be an issue too

Don't want to go even more offtopic on this thread about a (very) decent camera review, but I was just proving you that your statement was a bit un-researched :)

Eg. mentioning professional $30.000 cameras when there's a $300 one doing 4k at 15 fps, and we have 4 chips already launched, that can do 30fps and 60 fps at 4k, which might be easily implemented in 6 months into several mainstream and affordable cameras ($400-$1000).

Storage space is also not an issue. The GoPro 3 Black can use 64GB SDXC cards. Lukas can use 128GB SDXC cards. SDXC has been out for years. It will soon be in all these cameras.

I keep mentioning the GoPro 3 Black since it's (afaik) the only confirmed Ambarella 7 series camera out there, at this time.

Last, but not least, we'll have a *phone* that will do 4k. So yeah, I'm waiting for the dashcam that will do 4k :) (These guys are presumably already releasing a 4k dashcam in a few months. I have had several email discussions with them)
