What is an IR Dash Cam?

Infrared light is used by IR or night vision cameras to invisibly illuminate the interiors of dark vehicles at night. Nightvision dashcams are a great solution to record the inside of a car at night because of the incorporation of infrared (IR) technology. The inside-facing camera of a dashcam with night vision often uses infrared LEDs to record crisp images even in completely dark surroundings. These cameras are typically two-channel (have two camera angles) systems. These dashcam models are perfect for fleet or rideshare drivers who spend the majority of their time on the road at night or in low light.

What makes an IR dash cam special?

You can see the little lights that are positioned around the outside corners of the camera lens on the IR dash cam. These tiny lights, known as infrared LEDs, are what give the dash cam its "night vision." Infrared LEDs are not installed in standard dash cameras. IR dash cams utilize infrared LEDs to invisibly illuminate dark vehicle interiors at night.

How do IR dash cams work?

In order to record video in poorly lit environments, IR dash cams feature infrared LEDs, an IR cut filter, and a light sensor built into them. The camera's IR filter and light sensor are used to detect the amount of light and to capture the infrared light of objects in its field of vision, respectively.

The camera's infrared LEDs automatically switch on when the light level drops below a specified point, and the IR cut filter is activated over the picture sensor. The infrared light of objects in the camera's field of vision is then reflected by the IR LEDs. The camera can record infrared light and record a black-and-white video thanks to the IR cut filter. The infrared camera returns to normal operation as light levels rise.

Example Benefits of Dashcams with Nightvision:

Even when in low light, capture clear, crisp video.

Perfect for drivers of trucks that spend a lot of time traveling and frequently operate at night or in the ride-sharing industry (Uber, Lyft).

With the LEDs built-in, you can catch a car thief in the act and even recognize them with clear footage.
