video resolution and FOV

Does anybody know, why the resolution of 2160P 4:3 gives much more FOV than the other resolutions?
I always thought this is just about details and quality, but not about the FOV with the wide angel lens.
 
Maybe it doesn't use the zoom setting?
If you have zoom on minimum then I would expect to get the full sensor width in all modes.

Of course the vertical FOV will be much larger in the 4:3 mode.
 
exactly, but it does not.

did some testing today. tested all resolution on a tripod. only changed resolution, with no change to zoom level. zoom level was 1x all the time.

also I discovered that with 60fps the FOV changes as soon recording is started.
 
The FOV will be reduced if stabilisation is turned on, maybe that is what you are seeing?

I would have expected all resolutions with 4:3 (4-3) like nr 06, 10 and 12 to have the same FOV.
But only nr 12 has the full FOV.
Not settings but resolution were changed during the test.
 
I suspect that the sensor+processor is not capable of working at 60fps if using the full sensor area, so the 4:3 covers the area it can manage, except for the slow fps video.

It should give less fisheye that way, which is more noticeable on the 4:3 image since it reaches further into the corners of the lens. Maybe it is good that it works like this?

Unless I"m missing something, all the action cams do this even the go-pro. The 4:3 uses the full sensor to record the image when the other modes actually cut only use part of the sensor.

widescreen images are actually cutting out part of the full image sensor so that they can fit on your screen.

I looked this up a while ago so forgot all the details when I noticed all the action cams actually crop the image with resolutions like 1080p. But they usually had a 4:3 mode that had had much higher degree field of view up and down.

The issue is that on older cams like the gopro 2 or the garmin virb, is that when I tried to use the 4:3 to maximize the image view it only allowed me at lower resolutions, so the video didn't look at good. I was forced to use the higher resolution 1080p, even though I would get the top and bottom of the image cut off.

Sorry if what I am talking about is already known and you are talking about something else.
