VIOFO A329S

The A329S is an update to the VIOFO’s flagship dash cam the A329. The camera is similar to the A329 but adds a 3rd camera for the cabin making it ideal for rideshare drivers.

The VIOFO A329S is based on a Novatek NT98530 processor. It uses a 4K Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 CMOS sensor for the front camera, a 2K Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 CMOS sensor for the rear camera and the same IMX675 sensor for the telephoto camera.

Note that when the A329S was released, VIOFO also released 3 similar dash cams:

  1. A329T (3-channel: front, rear and telephoto)
  2. A329SW (3-channel: front, waterproof rear and interior)
  3. A329WW (3-channel: front and 2 waterproof rears)

While the 4 camera models are similar, this review will focus on the A329S.

Video Quality

The VIOFO A329S has excellent video quality, similar to the original A329. The front camera records 2160p (4K) video at 60fps with an average bitrate of 65 Mbps. This high bit rate delivers excellent video quality during the day for the front camera and good performance at night.

The rear camera records 1440p (Quad HD) video at 30fps with an average bitrate of 27 Mbps. While not in par with the front camera, the rear camera does a very good job during the day and an average job at night. That being said it is one of the better rear cams we have seen on a multi-channel dash cam.

The interior camera records 1440p (Quad HD) video at 30fps with an average bitrate of 27 Mbps, the same as the rear camera. This camera uses a very wide angle or fish eye lens with a 210° angle of view. This allows it to capture not only the interior of the cabin, but also the sides as well. A unique feature for a cabin camera. Video quality is very good both day and night.

Features

The VIOFO A329S has a 2.4″ screen, g-sensor and a GPS mount. The camera comes with WiFi 6, 5GHz & 2.4GHz. This is the first dash cam we have seem that utilizes WiFi 6, and it significantly speeds up the downloading of clips from the dash cam to your smartphone with either the Android or iOS app.

The A329S uses the familiar wedge shaped design as many of the other VIOFO cameras and comes with an adhesive mount. The camera cannot swivel to record interactions at the driver or passenger windows. Build quality is very good, and the camera comes with audio and screen error notifications.

This is a medium sized dash cam at 99 x 61 x 43mm. Not the smallest camera but not overly large either. The rear camera and cabin cameras are both 71 x 38 x 28mm.

The A329S supports the following parking modes:

  1. Auto event detection or buffered parking mode
  2. Time-lapse parking mode
  3. Low bitrate parking mode
  4. Low power impact detection (turns on 1-2 seconds after impact)
  5. Hybrid parking recording (combines 2 parking modes above)

To enable these parking modes, you will need to hardwire the dash cam to your car (the VIOFO 3-wire hardwire kit has a low voltage cutoff and is recommended). VIOFO has also a geo-fencing feature where for specified areas, like your garage, the camera will shut down instead of going into parking mode.

The A329S supports voice commands in 4 languages (English, Chinese, Russian, Japanese). The Lock Video one is the most useful, the rest are unlikely to be used on a regular basis.

The VIOFO A329S also supports external Solid State Drives (SSD) up to 4TB. The dash cam comes with a USB-C cable that can connect to an external SSD drive which can be hidden in the vehicle such as in the glove box. Some users have had issues with SSD drives so ensure you choose a recommended one from VIOFO.

The A329S can record to MicroSD cards as well like most other dash cams. However, the camera will not record to both at the same time. You will need to choose whether to record on the SSD or MicroSD card.

Support

VIOFO is responsive to questions and have good support. They also provide regular firmware updates and take into consideration user feedback. VIOFO also provides a 24 month warranty (18 months plus an additional 6 months if you register online) which is better than most dash cams.

Known Problems

Some users have had issues with SSD drives with the A329S. If you plan to use an SSD drive, ensure you utilize a recommended model from VIOFO.

Another feature that VIOFO offer is multiplex videos, allowing videos from 2 or all 3 channels to be combined into 1.

Should I Purchase

The VIOFO A329S has very impressive video quality for all 3 channels with STARVIS 2 sensors on all cameras. The A329S is currently the benchmark for 3-channel video quality. The A329S also delivers some unique features such as 4K 60fps front camera recording, external SSD support, low power impact detection, multiplex video and WiFi 6.

Build quality of the camera is very good, a 24 month warranty with registration is provided and VIOFO provides firmware updates to improve the camera over time.

The primary negative is the high cost at $450. Having separate cameras for the front lens and interior lens may not be ideal for some purchasers. Overall this is one of the best cameras to consider if you are looking for a 3-channel camera with great video quality.
