Is it necessary to power the camera through the GPS module for GPS to function?.... or can I power the camera through the side usb port and sit have GPS work?

Even though the V2 GPS is improved, if you don't plan to remove the camera on and off I'd still be inclined to plug power directly into the side of the camera long term to be safe.

dual mini usb male connector would be great improvement to address this issue - IMHO
