Vantrue Pilot 2 Thermal Smart 4-Channel Dashcam

if it sit there on the front of a car it will feel heat, even in the modest Danish summers.

I have been driving a car with a built-in thermal night vision system for the past two months, and it really shows the value that a thermal cam like the Pilot 2 could add. Especially to older cars without bright adaptive headlights.

From my experience, the safety benefits are just massive. The car's system actively highlights pedestrians and animals at around 100 to 150 meters, but you can actually spot the raw thermal signatures much earlier. Depending on the object size, they show up from 200 to 500 meters away, which gives me plenty of time to slow down. Driving through dark forests is way more relaxed now. I immediately see if something is glowing near the road, and just as importantly, an empty screen means I can drive without the constant fear of an animal jumping out.

It is also incredibly helpful in bad weather. The thermal camera completely ignores the blinding glare from oncoming headlights in the rain. It even cuts right through fog, where normal headlights just reflect a white wall back at you. Given these huge advantages, my expectations for the Pilot 2 are high. If Vantrue is able to deliver a similar performance with the P2, it will be a brilliant upgrade for anyone who frequently drives at night.

Where is your display mounted? Does looking at the display distract you from looking ahead, or is it a bit like glancing at the rear view mirror?

The image is shown right in front of me in the digital cluster of my car.
I don't think that it's distracting since it's just where my speed is shown.
Briefly look at the image and then the road again.

I see the Pilot 2 is now available to pre-order, available in three combinations:
- Thermal + Visible
- Thermal Only
- Visible Only

@Jeff_Vantrue the website listing incorrectly shows the same 'what's in the box' image for all three variants.

I live in a rural / agriculture area with miles of farmland far as the eye can see.
Speed limit on these country roads is 55MPH.
Farmers, ranch hands, and residents drive 65-75MPH+ in these sparsely populated areas.
Everyone drives Ford F-350, Chevy HD3500, Dodge Ram 3500.
These trucks weigh over 10,000lbs. with equipment & trailer.
They hit deer, and varmints all the time.
Thermal camera to avoid animal collisions is going to be on everyone’s 2026 Christmas list.
P2 says “AI Detection Distance Up To 330 feet”

Q: How long is human reaction time to see road hazard, and apply brakes?
Q: How long does it take to stop 10,000lbs. truck going 55MPH?
Q: Is 330 feet going to be enough?

Very curious to see how this camera performs! We live in a similarly rural area to @Chuck McCoy, there are deer everywhere. Thermal will be very useful. My car can do 60 or 70 to a total stop in about 150 feet or so, but it’s not a 5 ton truck. The real key will be reaction time.

Edit: ha, look at that, my flag changed because we’re on vacation in the UK right now…

I will have to note how many " chance of crossing deer " signs i pass on my weekly long drive, i think in one direction there are 2 places on the 45 km route, the other i think 3 - 4 places.
There of course also is the ever presence chance of hitting one in a not frequently used place, just last year i came across someone that had just creamed a deer, in a " normal " stretch of highway.
They can go pretty much everywhere, Denmark is not big on really big ass fences or barb wire for that matter.

Thank you for pointing that out! We’ll correct it as soon as possible so everyone can clearly see exactly what’s included in each package variant. We appreciate your feedback and helping us improve the listing.
