Newbie questions

Just installed my first dashcam, a mini 0826. Managed to get the unit that plugs straight into the obd port. Brilliant, no wiring to chase.
Unit will not power up through the gps unit, but powers up through the unit itself. Alas no working gps. The unit fires up instantly with the car starting, but the screen turns off after a few minutes. I think it is still recording, but am unsure. Is this normal or have l got some wrong settings in the menu.

There's a screen saver setting that turns it off, distracting if it stayed on, also illegal in some places to be on while driving

Can understand that. Mine is parked undercover most of its life. Hopefully it will survive.
I guess all dashcams in Australia are at risk of this. What did you replace the 0826 with?

Shadow 1S and now Viofo A119

I did like the 0826 before it warped and went out of focus, it had a better field of view (135deg). The other 2 have around 160 degrees which provides more peripheral vision but also more fishbowl effect.
