Have you tried going full screen? I find that the plates become very clear then.

I find that when I change to full screen and then use the space bar to stop the video, I get very clear, crisp pictures of license plates, bumper/window stickers, road signs, billboards, etc. Our (N. Carolina, USA) plates are on the rear only, and are about 3/4 the size of yours

When I go full screen, using the lukas viewer, and stop the action using the space bar, I get VERY clear pictures of license plates, bumper stickers, road signs, etc.

When I go full screen using the Lukas viewer, and stop the video (press the space bar) I get a VERY clear picture of the plates in front of me, at a distance of about 45 feet. Can also read bumper stickers, street signs and other road side signs.

while it isn't logical, stranger things have happened --- could it be the SD card itself? as a last straw, use a different sd card, preferrably a class 10, and reload AC 23 and the new viewer.

If you are still having this problem, I suggest putting the AC23 firmware file (available from Lukashd.com) on the card, then following the update procedure stated on the lukas site.
