The X3000 has much to recommend it, but also some amazing gaps including very limited 4K shooting time. At least the X3000 recognizes when it's overheated and shuts down. But that's all discussion for another venue. Enjoy the future, it's an adventure. :)

I simply don't understand what SJCam is doing about this problem. I'm still hoping someone will come up with accurate temperature data (how hot when doing what task and where the measurements were taken). Other than that, we're all just guessing.

That's going to happen with linear mode. There's an explanation based on the geometry of fisheye lens images landing on flat sensor and then trying to correct that error. But take it for granted that a full correction isn't going to happen in any small action cam. This isn't a problem with the SJ8.

@benjos Thanks for all of your input. To avoid non-stop ripping the SJ8, what do you like about the SJ8?

Sigh... it sounds as though a) the new body cover isn't very good about unloading heat, and b) SJCam f/w hasn't gotten heat under control, anymore than with the SJ7.

It's becoming too easy to point out the omissions and mistakes and "eye wash". It's looking more and more like an unsuccessful sequel to a good movie. I suppose $300 vs $200 for the SJ7 is understandable, but are the changes worth it?

Are you willing (and able) get a handheld IR temperature "gun" at Harbor Freight? Having data from that will give a sense of what the temperatures are. In some instances the SJ7 can get up to some astoundingly high temperatures, enough to produce 1st degree burns (sort like beginning sunburn)...

@benjos How hot does the SJ8 get when it's shooting video? And when it's charging?

VLC commits a number of sins including with audio lists, not looking up cddb titles (asked about that, the reply was fine example of the snotty reply) etc., etc. As I said it's a necessary evil. I would like to find a viable alternative. So far, nada.

VLC is not very good with 4K. After I transcoded my videos from 1080p to 4K, it often couldn't get through less than a minute of the video. It plays DVD's well, and does a good job with 1080p from the SJ7. I even can invert the image, although it takes a bit of looking looking around to find the...

VLC is ...um... somewhat finicky about what it will and won't show. My player of choice is MPC-HC - its development is frozen, but it's still a good video app. https://mpc-hc.org/downloads/

About pulling the battery, do you need to do this? That is, how hot does the camera get? I understand that if the camera is used only with external power pulling it is a good idea. Since the SJ7 can damage batteries due to heat, it makes sense to protect the battery. The SJ7 has a recovery...

Yep, $289 each. Sigh... This is so effin' stupid. "You can buy them but we won't let you in on the secret." It's enough to make even Paul "never known to cuss" Ryan say words that would fill the "bad words fine" jar.
