I started looking back at some of my videos. I'm really not sure if i'm happy or not.

Some light conditions are very poorly displayed. The video quality in good light is sometimes not the best either. I actually think my G1WC may have been better. This doesn't seem right to me, given the price difference.

Here are some samples:

I know a CPL filter might help with some of this, but I'm not feeling the performance is what it should be. From memory, my exposure setting is the lower part of the display. Can't recall the specific setting offhand. But it should be exposing for the road/cars, not the sky. This is the worst part. There's no reason the videos should be so dark in the lower half, if that's what I have it set to expose for. I don't care if the sky gets blown out.

And the last video especially, shows very average quality.

How do these look in comparison to others with the same camera?

Which AE setting are you using?

It's 0.

Also, I checked AE metering, and it's set to centre-weighted. I could have sworn I changed it to low-cut. I've set it to low-cut now. I'll see what difference that makes before adjusting anytihng else. Do one change at a time.

Those blocks look really bad! You expect some with all those trees, but this much?

I just don't like to have too much bonnet showing, as it's a waste.
I would agree that aiming the camera higher to cut out some of the 'wasteful' bonnet seems a good idea, but only if you can use appropriate AE/metering settings to tell the camera that's what you're doing and what part of the frame you want to have exposed correctly. At least with the GC on beta FW you have that option - most dashcams are not so flexible in their settings.

Yeah but low cut is not optimal as it seems to favour the sky too much, center still is best.

I used to aim high as well with other cams as it gave me better results with the long bonnet, but can't do it with the GC due to it's angle limitations

Thanks guys, I'll give that a try to see if it helps. I just don't like to have too much bonnet showing, as it's a waste.....

JMO but empty sky isn't of much value either - unless you're scanning for UFOs. ;)

Yeah, that's about as bad as I've seen from an SG product.

I notice that @David Watt 's video has been re-encoded as a 13s MP4 clip at 24.9Mbps. This screen grab shows the file info provided by PotPlayer, compared to a raw GC sample I pulled off DCT.

Wait, is low cut where it ignores the bottom, or meters for the bottom?

I think I thought it metered for the bottom, but it doesn, does it? It ignores the bottom?

Yea, I used Windows Movie Maker to cut the file up. Saved as 1080pMP4. Didn't think this would affect quality? I compared with the original, and they look the same.

Upload the original full file so that jokiin's henchmen can analyse what went wrong.

Yep, I can do that. I'll start it going when I go to bed, given the size.

What one are we all talking about? The last one with the pixelation?

This is why the naming/documenting of various options is critical - to avoid exactly this type of confusion/misunderstanding.

best is reload firmware, reset defaults and only change one setting at a time, if you want to cut a section of video anytime use Registrator Viewer as it will cut without any re-encoding, original unaltered files are always best but not always practical
