Hard to think of a better example of the value of a dash cam! And in Canada no less! 😀

Odd that the driver veers to the left, and not the right - perhaps he was expecting the merging driver to see him and stop? Also, he does not seem to brake aggressively - his exclamation comes quite late - but this could also be an illusion, just as some cams (wide angle?) make it appear that you're driving faster than you really are. In any event, doesn't change anything, the other driver is caught dead-to-rights - just would like to see better defensive driving practices. Slow down, look ahead and anticipate mistakes by other drivers, anticipatory brake, always veer right on a two-lane highway...

Yeah, this video got a lot of coverage - it was posted on the web page of the national newspaper in Canada (Globe and Mail), and lots of other news stations carried the story. Interesting to see it got coverage in the US on CNN as well.

As JayTee says, looks he thought at first that the driver would see him and stop, and he'd pull around by going to the left into the oncoming traffic lane (never a good idea!). But when the other vehicle keeps coming, he has to go to plan B and start to brake and go right. By then it was well too late to do anything. It's easy to loose focus when highway driving and get lulled into a sense of comfort that nothing will go wrong.

Very true, @tofurkey - I frequently catch myself doing that, especially on long trips, and have to remind myself to stay alert at all times...

I notice this with a great many of the Russian crash clips, no matter which way the idiot is going, the cam car always seems to veer into them.
In this instance, the cam car clearly veers over to the left - into oncoming traffic.
If the idiot had seen him and braked, this would've left cam car right in front of whatever was coming. There would have been one heck of a smash & I suspect idiot driver would've driven off, safe in the knowledge that no-one got his plate.
