it's a honeycomb of metal inside - a big huge crumple zone. it also has some springs in the mount for flexibility, so it doesn't make the truck shake too much while driving, and to help with non-direct hits. last but not least there's hydraulics to lift/lower the crash structure.That yellow thing in the back is some sort of compression device, in case the slow moving truck gets rear-ended. Gee, I wonder why they need that?
I'm not sure if there are springs or some sort of tensioned release valves?
I"ve seen a car hit the water barrel barriers they used to use, and that was actually pretty cool. Water shot straight up, drenching the whole area.
