I'm wondering if I can install this back to front, rear camera at the front and front camera on rear screen.

The reason for this is, I am having trouble placing the front camera in front of the rear view mirror, the rear camera would sit in front of the mirror and be nice and neat.

The front camera would sit fine on the rear screen and not be seen as the glass has a dark tint.

I'm not worried about parking mode or lane departure etc, I would however like the speed camera alerts, will this still work with the system technically working in reverse.

I had never thought about doing that, and in some respects it seems like a good idea. However I can raise the following issues:
1) The main camera needs the power connection of course so unless you can reach permanent and switched power at the rear the cable will have to be run to the front. Depending on the car this might be a problem as the hardwire cable may not be long enough.
2) The audio comes from the main unit so if it is at the back you might need to increase the volume to be sure of hearing the speed camera alerts. That shouldn't be a problem except that this might be annoyingly loud for passengers in the rear.
Other than that I really can't see any reason why it wouldn't work as the GPS part shouldn't care which way the camera is facing. I shall be very interested to know how you get on. If you had made your suggestion a few weeks ago I might have considered it seriously but I think its too late for me now. My main unit is only partly behind my rear view mirror (Audi S5 sportback) so I can see it whilst driving, however it doesn't really bother me.

good idea indeed. personally the only negative point is that i wouldn't be able to use manual recording.

I haven't found the need for manual recording since it is continuous when driving and motion sensing when parked. What's the typical use-case for needing to do a manual recording?

The other think that wouldn't work with the front camera at the rear is the LDWS and collision warning. Personally I don't use these features since my car already has them.

Thanks for the replies, I have currently got the system set up the right way round with the front camera sitting to the left of the mirror looking out, this means the view is off to the left of centre (near side), I haven't been able to do a road test yet as the car is currently off the road, but seems to view enough of the area in front of the car.

Once I get the car back on the road (March/April) I will then decide if I'm happy as it is or not.

As it is set up the front camera is hidden from view from the drivers seat, but obvious from the passengers seat, need to get some black tape though, so it's not so obvious from outside.

If I was to reverse the set up I don't think the audio would be a problem as I don't tend to carry passengers, this is a weekend car, I believe that the power lead is long enough to route from front to back.

.

it's sort of a hobby of mine to collect clips of crazy drivers (i live in marseille... my collection is extensive 🙂 .
with manual recording it's easier to find the clips back as otherwise you'd have to remeber the exact time/date.
so i agree that it's not a feature you'd really need..
