More than I can review. ;)

Move over or pay up. That’s the message from police to slowpokes.

Multiple states are taking aim at drivers clogging up the left lane on highways by passing laws that could lead to fines up to $500 for drivers who refuse to move over when traffic backs up behind them.

Indiana recently passed a bill that will allow police to cite drivers in the left lane if they are holding up other motorists. While tickets could reach up to $500, it’s likely most fines will be much less, according to USA Today.

The bill goes into effect July 1. The new law does not apply during severe weather situations and traffic jams.

Colorado’s left lane law went into effect in July 2004. It reads: “A person shall not drive a motor vehicle in the passing lane of a highway if the speed limit is sixty-five miles per hour or more unless such person is passing other motor vehicles that are in a nonpassing lane or turning left, or unless the volume of traffic does not permit the motor vehicle to safely merge into a nonpassing lane.”

Lawmakers in Oregon are also considering a similar bill. Last year, troopers in Oregon pulled over 14,000 drivers for left lane violations, but in many cases they only issued a warning. The new bill calls for penalties of $124 or more, depending on how far under the speed limit drivers are going.

Georgia, New Jersey, Florida and Michigan have similar laws in place. A bill introduced in the North Carolina Senate earlier this year would allow police to fine drivers $200 for driving below the maximum speed in the left lane.

Studies have continuously shown it is safer to pass on the left. Drivers hogging the left lane also increase the likelihood of crashes by backing up traffic.

Forty states have some form of penalty in place for drivers clogging up traffic, according to NBC.

not often, but do love driving in Germany!!!!
No speed limit, driver culture is truly eye opening...

We have -

"Keep left unless overtaking

Where this sign is shown, or on multi- lane roads where the speed limit is over 80 km/h, you must not drive in the right lane unless overtaking another vehicle, turning right, making a U-turn, avoiding an obstruction, or traffic is congested."

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be very effective.

We also have keep left unless overtaking in the UK but the drivers ignore it.

Heck they even join the motorway and go straight for the middle lane here when there's nothing around 😛

It would seem that it would still be legal to pass a car in the left lane if they are doing 0.5 mph less than you are. You are passing just at a leisurely pace.

As a child in California I remember different lanes of Hwy 101 having different speed limits assigned to them, a similar approach. Either way makes sense and I like it. The main thing is to get rid of drivers who are not cooperating with the traffic flow (whatever it is) and get rid of the idea that speed kills. Crashes kill, not speed, so concentrate on stopping crashes instead of ticketing for just a few over the limit when they were driving safely otherwise. My old work van isn't fast nor do I drive fast (I go the speed limit) so I stay in the outside lane and let the rest of the world fly by. I really don't care how fast you want to go, just go around me like I'm trying to help you do and let me go on safely.

Driving in traffic is a lot like American Square dancing. If everyone does the right thing at the right time the movement is smooth and fast with everyone happy at the end. But all it takes is one person doing the wrong thing to ruin the happiness of all the others. Get rid of that one so the rest of us can be happy.

We have few places where left lane and HOV lanes have minimum speed instead of speed limit.

I think it's hilarious. You'll often see the left lane clogged with cars, bumper to bumper, 'PASSING' nobody. The right lane is empty. Then you'll get a car that breaks out of the left lane, jumps to the right, passes the stream of traffic it just escaped in the left lane, only to jump back in the left lane when they have passed the pack they were a part of.....AND THERE IS STILL NOBODY IN THE RIGHT LANE.
If the cops ticketed these idiots, they would all be screaming 'don't you have some real criminals to catch?'
😉

When my mother was very elderly, she was still a pretty good driver, but had some bad habits.
She lived north of town, a block or two off of a 4 lane divided highway, but not a limited access highway. (there were intersections, traffic lights every 1/2 mile to mile in some places)
As soon as she hit 'that road', it was over to the left lane until she had to make her turn.

'Mom, why are you in the left lane?"
'You know why! I have to make a left turn at Cowpatty Farm road!'
'
Mom, that's 9 miles away.....'

In the meantime other people who thought they owned that lane would honk, tailgate, and flip the bird at the old lady in the Volvo. (Usually pass her, jump in front of her, and homestead that lane, too)

Keep right except,
1) to pass,
2) turn left
3) allowing car to merge should be mandatory.
Will be easy to police too.
