Looking for a somewhat discrete dash cam for my XC60 that my son mostly drives.

Was very interested in the FitcamX style which looks OEM, gets power from the rear view mirror enclosure and is hidden inside it.

But have read some negative comments around quality.

For the most part, looking for a cam where if he gets into an accident he’ll have some proof around fault. Parked capability is a nice to have but have read issues about battery drain which is concerning.

If I had to prioritize:

- Clean/ease of installation: are there other cams that I can use the same plug inside the rear view mirror similar to the FitcamX? Or something where I’m not running a wire to the center console and using a USB port?

- Discrete - something that won’t look gaudy/out of place in the car (have seen some pics of folks having the dashcam behind the rear view mirror but not sure which those are)

- ease of use

- doesn’t break the bank

- GPS … more a question…what exactly does a dashcam need a GPS for?

- good enough video quality. I see folks talking about being able to pick up license plates etc..but not sure how practical this is (knowing how hard it is for my dedicated at home license plate camera to pick up plates at night, inclement weather etc)

A couple that might fit the bill but not sure how clean and easy of an install. Am I on the right track here? Other things I should be thinking about?

Here are a few additional models:

A119 Mini 2 Pro a 4K version of the A119 Mini 2.

Viofo VS1 a small unit without a screen.

70mai M800 a dual‑channel camera with 4K front video and an HD rear lens; it records to internal memory instead of a microSD card.

Vantrue N2x (Nexus 2X)
is also worth consideration. Not 4k but has cabin camera as part of the one assembly.

I have used all of the cameras mentioned above. The **Vantrue E1 Pro** performed well; its front lens is slightly more prominent. It may be the cheapest in price but not in quality.

Both the Vantrue E1 Pro and the 70mai M800 can connect to LTE.
Viofo models do not have LTE connectivity but who knows what the future may bring.

Thanks for the reply. What about connection? Ie the Fitcamx connects directly into the housing behind the rear view mirror via a cable. Is that something most cams can do or am I running the cable up and then down towards a fuse box or usb input in your experience?

What about connection?

In my case i usually connect via CLA (cigarette lighter adapter) or via the fuse box. Or Powerbank however this still needs to be connected to be recharged.

Others have mentioned products like fitcamx but i haven't had any first hand exposure to them.

Other here might like to chip in with their knowledge, experiences.

Here is a hardwire install that I did for a Vantrue E1 Pro in a 2014 Camry. It’s a relatively easy and clean install. I only removed the A-pillar cover and went right to the fusebox. For your XC-60, I think the fusebox is in the passenger footwell, so it’s close by. Just watch out that you don’t get caught up in the airbags.
