I have my delay timer spliced into the live wire from my cigar lighter, before it gets to the extension socket (so even my phone has to wait for a charge!)
Ignition on. Timer begins countdown - I set mine to 10s
Meanwhile, the glowplug light goes out (after about 5s) so I turn the engine over.
Power is cut to all accessories (to maximise engine cranking power).
Engine fires, I return key to on position & power is restored to accessories.
Timer detects power so, again, counts to 10.
After 10 seconds, the timer throws the switch allowing power through to the extension socket, cameras start & my phone starts charging.
It's amazing just how far you actually drive in 10s!
I've found 10s to be about right based on time taken for glowplug light to go out in the winter months.

I find that delay time should be longer than entire car post procedure. I have car with start button and diesel engine so post takes longer time. I have set 35s. It is quite safe because I do not have to be in a hurry and I can make some adjustments like chair position, mirror without thinking about camera :) Additionally my wife do not have to know anything about delay issue...
