Generation # before purchasing.

From the images that is at least #3, however the images may not match the product!

The chances of getting an early one with issues are about zero, they were all sold months ago.

Is there any way to distinguish what generation the unit is before buying online?
I am about to buy from here:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271802334638.

don't let the advertising sway you, seller is based in China, better to buy locally @Chris Hunt is an active member here and sells for not a lot different in price http://www.dashcamscentral.com.au/dash-cam/dash-cam-mini-0806/ he's customer service focused so if you have an aftersales service issue you'll be far better looked after

Thanks Jokiin.
The seller is not hiding the fact that the item is in China. It is clearly marked as such.

I just found the dashcam central listing and have emailed them for a price on the unit with a spare GPS base, but no SD card or lens filter.
If it is within coo-ee of the ebay seller, my preference is to buy local of course.

A cheap purchase offshore carries far less risk, a purchase this size and this type of product has greater risk and if you do need service its a product you can't easily send back as they're not possible to send via post due to the battery

Agreed. Funny about batteries, they come in and get delivered via Aus Post, but can't go out the same way.

You need approvals to send products with batteries, we have them as do many suppliers, not something consumers have though, some sellers play on this and know you can't send products back, not nice but it happens regularly

Thanks Jokiin.
