Which seems rather strange - especially given that it's a van!

Maybe he did put the handbrake on but left the engine running, dodgy handbrakes can slip off - too many people yank on their handbrakes with little thought to what this action does to the ratchet. People need to learn to press the thumb button whilst applying the handbrake, it disconnects the ratchet mechanism.
