HEVC support on A329?

Would you pay $5 for downloadable licence for H265 on your dashcam?

Well; generally speaking, yes. Especially if I had a strong need for it. But, I would rather have 264/265 as a part of dash cam to start with and to pay the nominal fee up front. The problem is not cost, I showed in another thread where the cost was something between .20 cents and .50 cents as I recall per device. Chump change for a license fee. But as I believe you and others have mentioned, I think the big hangup on 264/265 is heat generated, and possibly processing power.

If it was clearly superior, but I can't see the difference in image quality between H264 and H265 video when they are using the same bitrates. There should be an image quality improvement when parked, given that the same bitrates are used, but since we use fixed bitrates, it is only ever going to be noticeable when there is a lot of movement in the image, and as far as I can see, the fixed bitrates we use actually allow for using some extra bitrate for a short time when there is movement, it is a fixed average bitrate, so can increase temporarily and make up for it later, so I've never seen a visible improvement from using H265 when using the same bitrates. I do see lower image quality on some cameras, because most dashcam manufacturers use lower bitrates when using H265. There are one or two dashcams that use higher bitrate for their H265 video, and then you do get higher image quality, but that is not because you are using H265, it is because of the higher bitrates.

The same argument will go for AV1, however AV1 does appear to be able to achieve the same licence plate readability as H264 while using significantly less bitrate, it also appears to achieve less pixelation than H265, and I don't like the H265 pixelation.

There is also the possibility that AV1 will bring us 10 bit video, with a genuine improvement in image quality. We have never seen a 10 bit dashcam so far, although it is available on some phones and action cameras that use H265. Not sure how useful that will be for a dashcam, but when a license plate is hidden in the shadows, being able to turn up the brightness and contrast without just seeing noise, could help with license plate reading.

I guess most people will expect it to be license free, since an AV1 license is free; however the dashcam will need an AV1 encoder, and there will be a license for the encoder design.

Big thing about H265 is the reduction in file size to me with no noticeable loss of discernable quality. Whether it's movies, or recorded footage on phones, or dashcam videos it's all for the better. It will do until AV1 comes along, I'd much prefer the option.

10 bit recording will come soon enough to dashcams, I'd say faster than av1 since adoption on phones is trickling down into the midrange now for that feature. Will it help massively? Who knows. But good to have any improvement no matter what.

I doubt AV1 will get enough traction to be useable by the masses.

It can barely be used today on Twitch and that's a polarized nerd fest of gamers with dedicated graphics cards and update obsessions.

Yet Youtube, Netflix, and Vimeo use it for streaming recorded video without anyone noticing anything but the improved image quality!

Google Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp use AV1 for real time video streaming.

"Google Meet, a key WebRTC application, has been actively using AV1 in low bandwidth conditions to support extremely low bitrate video communication."

I think a codec, is just about one of the only places where free might actually be good, other things and the word free should raise eyebrows.
As they say nothing is free.
Danes think we have free healthcare and what not, i am more thinking along the lines of, in Denmark these free things probably cost more than many other places, just it is paid over the tax, and as we all know when it come from that coffer, no one is holding back in getting some of that.
So i think getting a regular thing like say a appendix operation on a Danish hospital, the price for that forwarded to the tax coffer, probably HUGE

Come on man, you start off so well then you go off topic again

hehe a problem i have, trust me it could be very very much worse, these days my brain wont even allow me to sleep, when i go to bed in a few hours, well it will be 10 or so hours before my brain will let me sleep
And no my public healthcare doctor have not given a damn for 10 years now.

The only reason I replaced my Viofo A229 Plus for the Viofo A229 Pro because I got aware that Dex_ created a clever firmware (MODE 4) allowing HEVC H.265 recording without reducing the bitrate (therefore increasing video quality) compared to the official firmware in case of the Viofo A229 Pro. As a welcome "side-effect" any camera (rear camera, interior camera, telephoto camera) that is connected to the front camera will inherit the HEVC H.265 capability. What a beauty!
