I brought one dashcam from Asia and I found that not so many people equip this kind of stuff here so it's a little difficult to find someone to equip it for me.....
The technician I found said this dash cam I brought is too heavy for the rear-view mirror and it's not legal. There will be two problems for me if I equip it:
1. It's too heavy so the suspension of the rear-view mirror might bend or loose soon. The dashcam itself doesn't exist in collision test so it might harm people in a real collision.
2. It might not be legal and I might get a ticket if the policeman is in bad mood that day...
3. The video it records might not be accepted as an evidence on the court....cause this dashcam is not legal...(they said the only legal one they know to do this job is GoPro)
I have so many questions about this, I'm new here. On this forum everyone are talking about dashcam, does anyone know if all the statement above are true or not? I might buy other dashcam if the one I brought is too heavy for the rear-view mirror, but about the legal part? Who can help me with that? Should I change to a new dashcam brand?
My car is 2014 Forester 2.5i, and I'm living in northern California (San Jose), the law between different states are not the same, I'm actually very confused here....
Here's the California law (http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc26708.htm)
Here's the dashcam product website (http://www.justmall.com.tw/cardvr/ProductsView.asp?id=34)
Attach is the product pictures I shot, anyone with experience that can help would appreciated...do you guys all do it by yourself? Currently I cannot find technician to do this for me. I have wire to connect the the cigar lighter and 3rd camera on the rear window.
Thanks!!!

1 is surprising and I think may be exaggerated. Is the model you have that heavy? I have seen these models in plenty of reviews and haven't heard any weight complaints. In a collision it would be no worse than any loose object in a car and couldn't weigh that much to cause serious injury. Besides its attached so should move much.
2. California law says nothing about rearview mirror add ons so doent seem an issue.
3 where is the list of legal Dashcams? Are they even aware of all the models out there? The law states nothing about "Dash Cams"

Sounds as if you got some bad info and either a lazy guy who didn't want to bother or didn't know what he was talking about. I will say I'm not a big fan of the mirror dash cams yet you payed the money, give it a go and see how it works. Then if you don't like it you will have a better idea of what you are looking for. Did your model come with a power cable? It should be a simple cigarette lighter plug and a long wire you can just run up the side pillars and hide. @Pier28 any help on this since your are in CA and sell a rearview dashcam?

yeah that's why I asked here......don't know why I have problems uploading the product pictures here. The link above shows the shape of the product.
Just don't know how to hide the wire, I don't have specific tools to disassemble my auto parts (also the roof since there's a 3rd rear camera) and that's why I need to ask.

Hi,

Except if you're almost always driving alone, I wouldn't pass under the carpet, but along the bottom hinge of the glove box.
Feet movements will eventually damage the not-so-sturdy wire.

Of course if the whole idea is "dear, your pretty feet damaged the wire so now we need a better dashcam", then forget this.

I think we'll try to find a technician in BestBuy or some car stereo store, the problem is we need to survey a new dash cam.
The one we bring from Taiwan is similar as the one on the picture above, it hangs on the rear view mirror.
The problem is, our rear view mirror was stick on the windshield like the picture below, it doesn't have enough support for such a heavy dash cam, the support of the rear view mirror is not going to the car roof.
Need to consider a lighter one or some other type dash cam.
