Seventh graders read at a seventh-grade level and understand it, and that seems to be the bulk of the internet. 🙂

Dashcam users on this site seem to be a somewhat brighter group of people than the standard internet denizen, and that is the group that I post to. Which term folks choose to use I am indifferent about, to be honest; but I do try to explain in such a manner that the seventh grader will at least have an idea of what the 12th grader is talking about.
I don't know if it's appropriate to put people down just because they don't have expertise in a certain area. We all have areas of specialization that we know little to nothing about, and that's totally fine and normal.

I will grant you that here on DCT, many people may have a higher than average knowledge of technical video details. The same could be said of chefs on a cooking forum, drivers on a racing forum, musicians on a guitar forum, or donkey kong players on a gaming forum. I'm not convinced that knowledge of a specific area of expertise necessarily correlates to brightness or intelligence though. If anything, it just means that the person has an interest in the topic and has spent more time learning about it than the general public.

Either way, the term 'upscaling' is indeed more precise than 'fake" and it is more fitting to use here on a dashcam forum specifically, given the audience. All depends on who you're talking to.

That comment is called projection; no one is being put down. I don't 'dumb down what I write, as a rule. The same as when I had cancer, I forbid my doctors, who were far more skilled at being doctors than I am, to dumb down anything they told me.

The industry has been upscaling for years, and with AI it is even more prevalent. Upscaling adds pixels, so an image can go from 2000 pixels to 4000 pixels. This is different than stretching an image. So, by the numbers, the scaled image is 4K as far as the pixel count; however, as for image quality, that is a different story. With AI, that upscaled image can be sharpened and filled in better. But it is not an accurate image of what was seen, which is important when looking for specific detail, particularly when there may be legal matters involving an accident.

If Mangoal stated they use an IMX335 with an image upscaled to 4K, then no one would have any complaints. It is all in the marketing of the product, and that is where they failed.

I think the term should be UHD not 4K is what I'm saying if we are going to insist on correct terminology.
Of course you are correct, but you’re forgetting one thing.
The core issue is combating false & misleading advertising of Fake 4K dash cams to uneducated FIRST TIME CUSTOMERS.
It needs to be simple as possible so the “least smart person” can understand.
Average first time customers have no clue what UHD means.
However first time customers have an understanding of 4K, 2K, and 1080p.
Example;
4K = Best
2K = Halfway Between 4K & 1080p
1080p = Basic
Current consumer market demographic of first time dash cam customers have the lowest IQ in recorded history, (Gen Alpha is even worse).
Majority of college graduates entering the labor force don’t know;
How many minutes in a quarter hour?
How many Dimes in a Dollar?
What is 7 x 6?
Or 4K UHD?
Instead of “4K UHD” I would rather see “4K (IMX678) or 4K (IMX908)” in the item description.
If a first time customer google searches UHD it’s going to send then down a rabbit hole of overwhelming confusion that brings more questions than answers.
If a first time customer google searches (IMX678) or (IMX908) they will see it’s just a piece of hardware.

Yep totally agree.

The resolution of 4K needs to be made very obvious from all dashcam manufacturers.

In some publications the manufacturers advertise their dashcams as 4K UHD and other times they don't, making it seem like a feature for some models. Advertising in this way helps companies who misrepresented their true resolution and hide behind the generic term of 4K.

In relation to Mangoal -
Mangoal approached me ages ago and when I ask some technical questions I never heard back from them.
I didn't bother following up. If they can't be upfront with their product specs then I'm not interested in them.

My point all along has been we need clarity across the industry to help consumers to easily compare brands specifications.
My monitors on my computer and my TV all use 4K UHD (no upscaling 'not always sure with my TV🤷‍♀️')

If a Dashcam company doesn't say 4K UHD then it might be fair to consider them as upscaled 4K?

Yep. Pretty much my point.

However it doesn't say much about the company when they try to confuse the public.

I hope Dashcam manufacturers don't start using upscaling because they say it in fine print or an asterisk next to the 4K* as their disclaimer. 🤷

Now back to broadcasting......

While we're on the topic of insisting on objective, factual product information, why do you advertise IMX335 models as 4K dashcams?
Has @Mangoal Dash Cam replied to the fair question that Vortex asked?

I would like to know the reason too.

You could say any of this about any product such as a cell phone, that a particular feature might be fake.

Is it deceptive practice to be something sinister to the consumer though, or just fudging the numbers? I think that's what you're going to struggle to prove here.

Is it ideal what they're doing? No. But it won't keep me awake at night hitting the caps lock key.

If you're really bothered by it, contact Louis Rossman - he does pretty good work on a lot of this stuff. Not sure you're going to get far but hey.
