Ipol 🙁 If repairs are too expensive I might bin it and update with a new PC

take it you shut it off, restarted again etc?

sometimes shutdown and remove battery for a while before restart is worth a try also

Hi ipol

can you give some more details of the vaio?

My mothers Vaio once had a similar problem; a simple closing and repoening the screen did the trick (as if the "sensor" didn't show "display's open"); remembering my old fujitsu siemens lifebook, there's been a small "trigger" for indicator if the screen's open; if your Vaio has something similar, check if it's moving...

If this is ok or not working, try to connect an external display on the VGA-port (if available); if the picture is shown, check the driver's setting and set it back to the internal display... If your Vaio has a shortkey (eg. FN-blue colored key) press that one... (also as "standalone-test" possible)

Worse comes to worse, it might be a loose contact of the connection-cable between the display and the notebook's motherboard; then you would have to open the case to check this... Don't try it without experience and needed tools (as you won't be able to close it if some connection-points brake)

Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice I already tried the blue fn button unfortunately nothing happened next step is to connect PC to television via an HDMI lead .....If all else fails I will take it to a specialist and get an estimate for repair before I commit ....Thanks again for the replies.....Ipol

Lucky as long as you dont want a kick ass gaming laptop, then you can get a decent laptop for little money these days.

My little sisters youngest daughter got herself ( yes she started working part time as a 13 Yo ) a nice gaming laptop, but she dont like taking it to school with her, so she just gotten some fruit company laptop for that.

Dunno why she got a gaming laptop to my knowlege she dont game any hardcore game, i think its all browser / APP games she play.

But i aint complaining, she is paying herself, so all i can do is support her, technical and what ever.

Hi ipol,

before you go to a expensive-shop, give this one a try, maybe it helps!

Hi mike-k some interesting repair videos I will try replacing the board as shown in one of the videos I dont feel confident enough heating that component I would probably end up setting the house on fire thanks for your input and time in seeking out these videos its much appreciated I will let you know how I get on ....Ipol

Well finally an update on the VAIO laptop its been laid to rest the cost of repair would have been close to the price of a new PC albeit a budget price model......I did some research and finally decided on the HP pavilion notebook 17-g188nf I5 CPU 17.3 screen and 2 tetrabytes HDD it was in the sales so I got a reasonable final price Its very fast........ VLC player and the lukas QVIA viewer both work smoothly and the Z970 dashcam is performing very well .....Ipol🙂

I didnt realize just how slow it was running at a snails pace lol.....Ipol......i got to pay in 4 installments at 0 percent So that was a bonus slowly getting Emails etc Skype and VSee installed

I just did a new machine for home a few weeks ago, previous one was 10 years old, a few upgrades along the way but night and day difference to my new machine, this thing is so fast now, should have done it sooner

Not quite but the processor was holding things back, new machine is quite high spec though which makes the difference even more noticeable

I read somthing on the new yesterday about how little RAM you can make do with in a computer, the article said most only use 10 %.

That did freak me out a little cuz right now just having firefox open i use 8% but i have 32Gb ram in my computer, and as i undestand it thats way more than most ppl have.

it's generally not the bottleneck, that said I have 32GB of RAM also, not because I need it but history shows that as computer spec gets better programs get more resource hungry just because they can so I figure better to have too much than not enough, I'm using i7-6700 Skylake processors but I'm sure the biggest gain comes from my M.2 SSD C drive which is on a 32Gb/s interface, data access is super quick

Yeah i am pretty happy about my SSD C: drive too, and prizes on current SSD drives.

I would not mind updating my currnet 256 Gb drive with a 500 Gb, but really i think the best thing for me is to invest in a LCD monitor cuz this CRT one make wierd noices once in a while, so i am pretty sure it kick the bucket soon.
