Need: Reviews on Rear View Mirror Cameras?

My priority is backup camera functionality and RVM clarity since the main reason I want to do this is to give my mom a backup camera.

Does she need the backup camera to record, of just for the live view while she has it in reverse?

Agreed, their pricing is just ridiculous too considering they use something like the years old IMX335. People get roped in and conned by it all

I just want a unit with a normal rear camera as well. Anyways it should be fun searching.

In this case mainly a backup camera. I’ve seen some standalone ones that put a screen in the dash and I don’t want to add an extra doodad on her dash. A RVM-style backup cam blends into the car better and since most of those have dashcams anyways, then it’s basically two birds with one stone.

That’s where I was headed, (killing birds with cake, and eating it too).

I chose this style so I could mount it under the lip of my trunk lid so it would be hidden as much as possible.
Zoom in on the photo, and you can see it above the 3 on the license plate, in front of the 13” LED light bar that is brighter than some car’s headlights. Lol
That also illuminates when I engage reverse gear.

I did this 5 years ago when I installed a Sony CarPlay Radio.
I replaced the radio so I could connect my iPhone for music & GPS Map capability.
When I was installing it I saw it had an RCA Video Input, (didn’t know that before purchase).
Since I had the car apart I figure why not install a $12 backup cam that will automatically display on my new stereo screen when I engage reverse.

Why am I wasting your time with this?
It’s possible even if your Mom’s car has the factory OEM radio / stereo if it has a “screen” it may also have an RCA Video input for Universal backup camera.
Even if it does not have the RCA Video input aftermarket stereo manufacturers might make an adapter for you Mom’s car.
Ask Crutchfield.com they will know, (been buying stuff from them since 1993).
So it might be worth taking a peek at the inputs on the back of the factory / OEM radio / stereo, (that is if it has a “screen”).
If it does not have a screen you could always say; “Hey mom, how would you like a new CarPlay radio for your car?” lol

Ooh great suggestion @Panzer Platform! Just spent some time chatting with Crutchfield and CarTunes and it looks like it's $500-$1500 for different systems, plus maybe another $500 in labor for the install unless I DIY it. Thanks for bringing this up. 🙂

If your mom is like mine she won't appreciate a new gadget like a rear view mirror camera.
But, if you can add backup camera functionality with a level of OEM integration (like it was part of the car from the factory) she may not notice it as much.

I agree, they are bulky, not as good as a dedicated dashcams and a bit harder to place the rear camera outside the car (like under a spoiler). So I actually was looking forward to getting the Viofo A139 Pro. But that was before I got my Hyundai Ioniq 5 which doesn't have a rear wiper. I'm too old school and rely on my rear view mirror way more than my side mirrors to see what's behind me. The highly rated dashcams are usually without a screen and those that do, are tiny. So I ended up getting a mirror dash cam for the time being.

Well i dont think i would like using a reversing camera, BUT ! i know my back would love it, CUZ turning in the seat to look out back, well not as easy as it use to be.
Will take some getting used to i am sure, but it is never too late for a old dog to learn new tricks.

I would prefer to use the big screen of my radio though.

I recently purchased and installed the WolfBox G900 (ie 4K front, 2.4K rear, smart touch screen with WDR, night vision, GPS, 65GB SD card) mirror dash cam that you are considering. The unit is very well made. The display is bright and crisp and the 25fps rate is sufficient to maintain the illusion of realtime video. As for using it as a rear view mirror, it takes some mental gymnastics, at least initially. The 1st thing is the field of view is SO much wider (150 degrees) than a normal rear view mirror. This is wonderful for eliminating blind spots caused by the rear C-pillars but it also throws off your distance judgement honed from years of a regular rear view mirror. The G900 functioning as a REAL rear view mirror (ie display off or in screen saver mode) work far better than I expected, but that defeats the field of view improvement. One unexpected mental adjustment was that with a real rear view mirror, your eyes are basically focused at infinity much the same as looking forward with driving but when using the G900 in rear view cam mode, your focus has to change to the distance to the mirror. It is not that massive an adjustment but it took some getting used to. I also found that when using the G900 in rear cam mode, the semi-mirrored surface caused undesired ghost rear reflections that were confusing as they were at the infinity focus. I wound up buying the WolfBox anti-glare film which resolves that issue at a very slight loss of display image crispness. I chose to hardwire the unit so as to gain the park monitoring functionality as well as making for a more professional installation. I upgraded to a Samsung 256GB C10 U3 SD card which is fully support despite some confusion in the documentation. I did discover that the GPS puck was perfectly happy tucked between the headliner and the roof making its installation a bit easier. Lastly I ordered the direct mount kit (ie remove OEM mirror, install G900) but then discovered that Honda uses a twist mount while the WolfBox mount expects a wedge mount. I was able to locate an adapter but with shipping it was over twice the cost of the WolfBox mount. The front cam with its 170 degree FOV makes the slightly adjustable physical aiming of the front cam somewhat superfluous.
The recorded image quality is top notch even when viewed directly on the G900. Removing the SD card and viewing the images on a laptop/desktop provides a superior experience which leads to one of my gripes about the G900. Getting the SD card out the top is a bit of a PITA. I so wish they had located it at the bottom or side. The front cam is a full 8mp Sony chip while the rear is a 3mp Sony chip, but the rear delivers outstanding image quality and both cams handle nighttime recording glare with ease.
While I have only had my unit for a fairly short time, I am very pleased and no regrets with my decision.

I'm currently working on a review of the Nexigo D90 Gen3. It's 4K up front with a Starvis 2 IMX678 (none of the fake 4K nonsense like so many other companies) and 1080p for the rear. I'm mostly interested in it as a backup camera and I like that you can do the backup cam either taking up the whole RVM with a very wide view, or make a smaller square'ish view so you can see more up and down. Right now I'm collecting and looking through sample footage and once it's all done I'll have a big video to share on it.

Not all dash cams are like that. I've tried the Mangoal dash cam, which is an awesome OEM-style camera with a very good 1080P rear view.

Great, but in this thread we’re specifically talking about dashcams that integrate with the rear view mirror itself, not just hide behind it.

We will be more than happy to assist you in gathering information / research to produce / release a dash cam products to be competitive in the market.

Btw, if your dash cam product’s are not equipped with;
1.) STARVIS 2 Image Sensors
2.) HDR
3.) Properly calibrated firmware so night time HDR actually works

Just forget it, and take your efforts to eBay, AliExpress, Amazon, etc. with all the other counterfeit / knock off junk.
