To me this is the point I made in a post where someone stopped at a roundabout because they couldn't see if any traffic was coming, just shows you don't pull out unless you know its safe to do so. don't rely on the car blocking your view to make the right decision.
I know I do make strange connections didn't think about the timing.Although being attentative is always the best approach, I'm not sure this case directly relates to the roundabout situation. The truck took about 3 seconds to enter the intersection after the lights turned green and was still travelling at a high rate of speed even after taking out at least one other car from the opposing traffic on the right. We don't know what the view was like to the right, so seeing the truck prior to entering the intersection from this point of view may been problematic and waiting 3 seconds after the light turns green could potentially cause other complications.
While I always look both ways when I'm the first in line when the light turns green, it's usually only a quick glance each way for someone right near the intersection. Not sure if I'd catch a dark speeding truck that far away, but I'll definitely try harder after seeing this. Also as fieldofview alluded to, I would've paid more attention to the near side cross traffic, as I would've expected the opposing traffic to serve as a shield to anyone running the light from that side. Clearly, that strategy was of no use against something of that size and speed.
Honestly, instead of red light cameras and other revenue based deterrents, I'd like to see traffic barriers that rise out of the ground, like those steel & concrete poles used to stop terrorists. We'd see much less yellow & red light running if permanent damage to the car was the guaranteed result.
