"Rear Sensor Not Insert" issue

I have a DR650GW-2CH that has worked fine since late 2014, I upgraded the firmware to version 1.007 and now the rear camera no longer will connect. I have verified that the cause is the firmware upgrade and not anything else like the cable, posting here to see if anyone has come across this and has a fix. There is at least one other person who has the same issue.

I use a 64gb micro SD so that's the card I used to perform the initial upgrade. After determining rear camera was no longer connecting I tried various re-formats and different size SD cards to no avail. I tried to downgrade to version 1.004 trying to borrow from instructions for downgrading a DR400 in this thread but was unsuccessful. Each time I put in an SD card with an earlier version of the firmware I would get an audible "Error 1" message and the unit would fail to boot.

I found my original 16gb SD card that came with my unit and it still had version 1.003 on it. I tried it and much to my surprise it booted and both cameras worked! But this was short lived because on the very next reboot the rear camera again failed to connect. I have not been able to replicate this. I checked the version.bin file on the 16gb card and it showed version 1.007, changing it back to 1.003 and trying to boot from it again did not bring the rear camera back to life.

I checked the log file in *:\BlackVue\System\ and noticed the "Rear Sensor Not Insert" message. I've posted my log below. Notice that initially the unit sees that the firmware version is different (1.003 vs 1.007) but still gets a positive "Rear Sensor Insert" message at [05:08:44], and subsequently the system starts and records both front and rear video as I indicated above. But on the next restart the versions are checked as 1.007 and we get a "Rear Sensor Not Insert" message at [05:11:48] and a "Rear Sensor Fail !!!" message at [05:12:02].

So if anyone knows how to fix this please let me know. Downgrading to 1.004 which I know works would be great as well if anyone has instructions on how to do it from 1.007 on the DR650GW-2CH. All the downgrade instructions I've found in other forums are for other models/firmware versions and haven't worked.

You can try downgrading to 1.004, please download firmware version 1.004 and carry out the steps below.

Change the version in the config > version file > open in text editor > change number from 1.004 to 1.007 - the system will perform an upgrade using the 1.004 firmware.

If downgrading does not work please return to your local supplier for warranty.

It worked. I knew I needed to edit the version.bin file but the crucial bit of information I was missing was what to change the version # to. Using instructions I found elsewhere for downgrading other models I assumed the change was to one version above to what I was trying to downgrade to so I was putting in 1.005.

It would seem Blackvue does little if any testing on their firmware upgrades. The forum is full of folk with issues like this.. or when the SD card is full it stops recording. Not very good in my opinion..One would think they (Blackvue) would be able to host a forum themselves to discuss "BUGS" discovered in the various firmware editions.. if they can not assure the folk the upgrades are ready for distribution.. without faults.
 
Is there anyone with 1.007? I'm experiencing the same after trying to upgrade to v1.009 via FOTA. Now I've done all sorts of things like put in a clean formatted SD, transferred data from another 650 I have. All it does now is freeze once it boots up with all front and Rec/GPS light up solid. No video is being recorded.

I changed from 1.007 to 1.009 a few days ago. No issue for me.


What works for me is:
Format the card in the camera.

Then power down, remove the sd card, bring to my windows laptop.

I backup the card first to a folder.

Then with my 1.009 folder, I drag and drop the Blackvue file to the sd card, and replace the files.

On my 1.007 software I saw this happen on both of my 650 blackvues, generally the camera would record fine. But when the car is parked for a while (and I have the camera running with the power pack), it would be frozen when I returned to the car. Certainly a software issue IMO with parking mode. Only way to reset it was to remove the power.

Hopefully 1.008/1.009 fixes this issue.
I haven't used my car enough since to see if I can repeat the error.
 
Something weird going on. Today I just drove my car with the issue and 20 minutes into the drive, the lady's voice comes back to life and things started to respond as per normal. This is on 1.009 after I updated it once more from 1.004 I found from a blackvue UK site. When I left the place, again, it was another 20mins when the voice came back. I got home and power cycled and it responded as per normal (within 30 secs) like my other dr650 in my other car. I managed to format the SD card from the blackvue itself so "hopefully" this fixes it. I'll go for another drive and monitor the situation but it's so weird.
 
Ok, back from my short drive. No luck. The blackvue failed to respond.

So this is what happens. Disappointing really.

 
I just upgraded from v1.005 to v1.009 and now the rear camera no longer works!!

[Edit] Downgrading back to v1.005 didn't fix the rear camera. Looks like my rear camera might be toast. :(

I've had the camera for 10 months, so should still be under warranty. I will try a "copy to card" upgrade to v1.009 and if that doesn't work, I get the replacement process started before it's too late.

I seriously think that for Blackvue that "if it ain't broke, then don't fix it" mentality. Copying the old card to the new card didn't work. I replicated the files on the 650 that was working in my other car and put it into this one and no response.
 
So a short bit of testing using v1.005, recording for 4 days shows the following:
105 files Font
42 files Rear

More than half of the rear files are missing and an entire day where no files were recorded for the rear camera. So, the rear camera hasn't stopped working entirely, but has become unreliable. :(

Also, I still can't connect to the rear camera and view live, I get the "Can't connect to Blackvue" message. I can connect to the front camera an view live.

I bought the camera last year, but only got it installed ~ 5 months ago. It didn't even make it 6 months before it broke.

Hopefully I can get a replacement, I still have a month or so for the 1 year warranty...
