It was easier to understand VR's video because he summarized the findings for me vs. trying to compare 2 lengthy videos side-by-side.
Sorry about that, I didn’t mean for you to watch the side by side videos, I just wanted to show how I tested it.
To summarize:
  1. 60fps isn't worse than 30fps for license plate visibility, but under most conditions 60fps isn't better at resolving license plates (i.e., what you said). Results will vary depending upon specific conditions.

But you would "never" use 60fps during night.
What is better than (60fps without HDR) for resolving license plates is (30fps + HDR). I personally plan to turn HDR back on.

If you “want the highest quality video from my fancy dashcam” you should only use HDR at night time, (not during the day).
Of course there are instances when HDR helps during the day, (cloudy / overcast) but generally speaking;
HDR Off: Day
HDR On: Night
However, I do not support use of HDR Auto Timer because it results in a recording lapse of 8 Seconds per day.


Q: So what am I supposed to do, manually enable / disable HDR twice a day every time I drive my car, (that’s crazy ain’t nobody got time for that).
A: In a case of “least worst compromise” I support enabling HDR On permanently, (set it, and forget it).
And put pressure on VIOFO for better firmware tuning so HDR can always be left on with minimal ghosting during the day, (just like Vueroid have done).
 
I agree, we’ve been asking VIOFO to change the default Bitrate setting from Normal to Maximum.

60fps does not capture license plates better than 30fps.
RCG530, and I tested this December 2024 with (2) A329 Units side by side.
Vortex Radar confirmed this June 2025.
However, I still want 60fps option because it forces manufacturers to build a more powerful / robust dash cam.
1.) More processing power
2.) More heat dissipation capability
If customers never select 60fps option they still benefit from increased reliability / durability due to more powerful components, and greater heat dissipation capability.
Maybe one day we'll have the hardware & software that will allow 60fps to capture license plates better than 30fps.
Maybe @VUEROiD already has, I never got around to testing that with S1-4K.


I've never done a comparison, but I do wonder if the benefit of 60 FPS over 30 FPS is more frames captured. If you frame by frame a plate that is hard to read, is there a chance one of those frames will capture that plate more clearer at 60 FPS over 30FPS? There begs the question.

Plate capture is better accomplished with higher bitrate, higher resolution (8MP instead of 5MP), and a different lens. Increasing the frame rate makes little difference in plate capture, with U.S. plates anyway.

As to your specific query...looking frame by frame at 60 FPS may show a slightly better image. But that image is also affected by speed, weather, time of day, windshield, and whatever else. Two blurry frames at 60FPS are
no better than one blurry frame at 30FPS. The answer is: It all depends on variables in play at the moment of image capture.

I see how you could easily "Misunderstand" my question, by not paying attention, because it wasn't proven by this video. Watching this video and doing a frame by frame are NOT the same type of comparison.

1. We have fluid motion in the video. Not a Frame by Frame.
2. The Lighting Conditions aren't variable.

Thus, my question if you read it carefully would be:

Are there scenarios where 60 FPS would actually capture a plate when 30 FPS could not due to the extra frames? I.E. You advance one frame at a time to analyze a blurry plate and are in fact able to decipher the plate from the 60 Frames versus 30 Frames.

Thank you for answering. So there may be a scenario where the extra frames do prove useful, depending on those variables, when advancing frame by frame might provide some additional information without any specific guarantee. As you put it, you might get 2 extra blurry frames instead of 1. Or the opposite may be true I surmise.

It can go both ways, for sure. I did a lot of testing with 60 and 30 FPS and found no guarantee that 60 FPS would always provide better image resolution on license plates. Multiple issues stem from the fact that these dashcams tend to use a wide-angle lens, which can conveniently put the license plate, when it is at its closest point to the dashcam, in the curvature of the lens. Then, of course, we have to factor in light, speed, opposing and approaching angles. I have been able to read a plate at 60 FPS on the rear license plate of a pickup truck towing a short flatbed trailer, in a slightly shaded area, going 45 MPH. Fifteen seconds later, at the next car, the plate was not readable due to sunlight reflection. Hit or miss.

Where 60FPS is really nice is for the bigger picture if someone really wants a more enhanced image. 60 FPS does a better job of rendering bigger images or scenes when the car is moving. Stationary and sitting in a parking lot...there is not a lot of difference in the images for 30 or 60 FPS. That is my experience anyway.

Users ask a lot from the dashcam manufacturers and brand sellers. But honestly, I don't think we will see any great improvements and overall satisfaction until we get at least 6K or better images.
