This is a current infomercial from up here, and sure if you drive 100 km/h on a 80 km/h highway then yeah your stopping distance will be longer.

It is cool how the final seconds is slowed down, sort of like you feel time stop or go slow when something happen.

From this coming weekend and 1 week on the police will be out with the speed measuring equipment, last year they wrote +7000 speed tickets in 1 week.
This year i think it will be much less as there is much less cops available to measure the cars.

In the end of the video it say " had he been driving 80 the accident would not have happened"

Now i am aware of camera lenses cheat, but if that guy pulled out so close to another car, even one doing the 80 km/h max highway speed, then he and i would have words if he did that to me.

I am pretty old fashioned so i think if my driving force another motorist to apply his brake or take evasive action, then i as a motorist have failed.
And failures anywhere should always be pointed out ( partly why i have cameras in my car )
If you just let failures slide by unnoticed, then you are making your world a lesser place, engage the wrongdoers and tell them their actions are unacceptable.

Current driving/riding "standards" in many countries are a reflection of years of repeated mistakes without any actual punishment, to the point many drivers/riders now consider those mistakes to be "acceptable". The passive attitude of many of the "victims" of those mistakes also doesn't help changing this situation.

Yeah and if go faster he will have passed. Be less time on the road. Much safer. πŸ˜€

Speed kills - so why aren't all racing drivers dead?
What kills in this advert isn't speed, it's the idiot who pulls out right in front of a car. There is no way that he could tell if that car was going 90kph or 70kph (if the limit is 80kph). Why take the chance?
If we look at the many clips of major smashes on YT, just about all on our motorways involve some idiot doing something stupid whilst everyone else is going about their business.

My argument exactly, sure had you been driving a little slower you might hit the dumb ass a little softer or even stop before him altogether.
And you cant drive around always factoring in all the stupid someone else is going to do in 3 - 2 - 1 😱 that would drive anyone insane.

If you are going to do anything, then hit the stupid ppl harder.
And by that i dont mean crash into people on purpose ( though i often think that when i managed to avoid some dumb ass ) what i mean is the law and police got to hit them harder with fines and confiscation of car.
Taking the car i bet is better in the long run than taking the license, not least in a country like mine where you pay for 2 cars to get one.

Yes, a well made advert, but focusing on a secondary factor.
Speed is rarely the cause of a crash in itself unless it's wildly inappropriate or defying the laws of physics.
Maybe if the ad said slow down for junctions the message would be better. The key is to see the risks staring you in the face and deal with them.

Rajagra has it right- crashes kill, not speed. Speed only makes the crash impact harder, but without the crash there's no problem with speed.
Kamkar1 has it right about how you drive affecting others- if they have to do something to allow for yoy then you are doing something wrong.
Viking is right about a crash happening to you only when you are in attendance- if you aren't there where the stupidity is you can't crash into it.

But a good advert which should get most people thinking and maybe save some lives too, even if that targeted audience doesn't see as deeply as we do 😎

I bet the video in top of the tread, is broadcasted wide by the Danish national propaganda TV station, so there can control peoples behavior.
I remember in the old days 45 years ago, the used 5 min video for "Information TV for citizen" with don't do that or do that stuff.😱

There should get some inspiration from this video and say keep away from public road, so its safe for us there try to keep around the speed limit.πŸ˜‰

SPEED IS FUN.πŸ™‚πŸ˜€
4:29 WTF Total Insane. Look at the red boat, its lifted total out of the water except for the boat propeller.

Many of them are but I quoted your post because I can't believe you asked that question. πŸ˜€

It's not the speed as much as it is driver's exceeding their car's abilities and their own driving skills. Very few people know what their car will (or won't) do because they never pushed it that far and everybody thinks they can handle it when most cannot πŸ™ When I acquire a vehicle, as soon as I get used to it I go out and give it a thrashing so I'll know it's limits and handling quirks. We'd do well to require a bit of 'autocross' and crash-avoidance type testing before issuing a driving license but we don't and that is why for the average motorist speed does kill them even when it didn't have to happen that way.

Watching those crazy Russian vids you'll see where situations like in the OP vid happen. Instead of steering around the problem everyone slams on the brakes and crashes. If they do try to steer around the other vehicle, they steer in front of it's path instead of behind it because initially there is more space there. They do not think far enough ahead to realize that by the time they get there the open space will be behind the intruding vehicle, not in front of it. Even if that vehicle stops cold, you still aim behind because they are prepared to go forward and they might open the space you need- they will certainly not have time to reverse and get out of your way nor will they. Anti-lock brakes are an immense help but they cannot change your path to a safer one- you have to do that on your own. Riding a motorcycle taught me to always be looking for the softest spot to aim for if a crash became inevitable, and that technique works equally well for cars too πŸ˜‰

No matter what the posted speed limit is, never exceed your speed limit 😎

I was taught to differenciate speeding from excessive speed. Many people think it's the same thing. My driving instructor always said "you can be driving at 20km/h (12mph) and be doing excessive speed".

We rarely see bad winters here so nobody knows how to drive when we get them. A few years ago in those circumstances, the Highway Patrol publicly announced that any driver it found in the ditch would get a ticket for "Driving too fast for Conditions". One guy was doing fine, and he stopped his car to see if he could assist someone else in the ditch. Nobody was in his parked car when gravity and vibrations from the idling engine sent it sliding into the ditch too. Of course that's when the patrolman showed up and gave him his ticket πŸ™„ On it his estimated speed was listed as "0" but the courts upheld the charge of "Driving too fast for conditions" because they held that he shouldn't have been driving at all.

How being at a complete stop with the car in park and the handbrake set is going too fast is beyond me, especially when you're not even in the car, but apparently it can be here in SC πŸ˜•

That's the problem with law enforcement in many countries: either is too lenient or too harsh. There's no middle ground anymore. And when courts start making up their own rules, like in this case, there's no possible escaping.

Here in Portugal there's a chronic problem, not with the snow but with the first rains. Everytime it rains properly after a long period of dry weather, chaos takes over the roads. I call that time of the year "When Body Shop Owners Smile And Insurance Companies Cry". πŸ˜€

Here in SC there are two types of drivers in the rain: The idiots who clump together in separated 'packs' and follow each other much more closely than in the dry, and those who are terrified to drive over 35 MPH even on the highways πŸ˜• It's totally insane and absolutely proves there is something seriously wrong with how we teach and test drivers before allowing them to drive. Again drawing on my motorcycle experience, when it rains here I drive as far away from everyone else as I can get- if there's nobody around you then nobody can crash into you πŸ˜‰

At least half the drivers here need to be taken off the road immediately and for maybe a quarter of them that should be permanent.

Phil

Strong words, but hard to come up with a counter argument.

Every time it rains here most drivers slow to a crawl causing massive congestion.
But it's not intelligent choice of speed. They do exactly the same speed whether they have good visibility or not, and when they are going around tight bends. No thinking involved at all.
They also pull away really slowly from a stop. No idea why they feel that's safer. πŸ˜•

They also pull away really slowly from a stop

Thats what i capitalize on in my little car, and why i do most of my overtaking at intersections.
Last night i kept a big ass BMW behind me as at every intersection he just had to mess with his infotainment system, and so i got a jump on him again and again.
This is also why you often see me in the left lane on dual lane roads in town, im overtaking and going placesπŸ˜€ ,,,, until some grandmother is holding me back ( and that happen often in the left lane )
