SSD doesn't worked - solved

can you share me a debug process to get the log what is happened in the process of detecting usb? I will patience to work with manufacturer know why it’s could happen. I believe many people have struggle with 4TB ssd same as me

It seems to have problems mounting / detecting SSDs, no matter what capacity. Not sure what is going on here..
 
Some SSDs write speeds go very slow once the buffer is full. I hope this is not the problem.

The cache fills when you're copying at max speed for sustained bursts, I don't think that would apply here because it's not writing at such max speeds anyway.

Also the issues folks are having are to do with the SSD at startup of the vehicle, it never cuts out in my experience while driving (when it is recording to it of course)
 
I have been using the following setup for two months:
Londisk SSD 480GB on the SM2258G controller, purchased in 2019.
Placed in an Orico case for an external hard drive, purchased in 2022 without additional power supply.
I use a VIOFO cable to transfer data from the SSD hard drive, 2.5 meters, via a Type-C female to USB 3.0 female adapter

No problems have been noticed since installation.
A memory card is installed in the recorder.
I checked it several times, it remains empty.
I am writing this for statistics.

Only difference I can see in your setup versus the others stated here is that you have the older SATA SSD, while others with problems are using NVMe SSDs
 
I think the important thing to keep in mind is that NVMe is a data storage and access protocol for SSD memory. The SATA SSD does not use NVMe and, therein may be the issue with why SATA works error free and some NVMe do not. I see probable issues from using common bus paths, various firmware checking and timing issues, to even a faulty microSDXC card slot declaring the microSDXC to be present when it is not.

These are the type of issues where VIOFO needs to open their mind up a little bit and provide a testing firmware that will record the boot and device init process to the end user. VIofo hiding from the end user and flogging the horse to death behind the scenes does not sit well with me when there are these type of issues.

Since it is a new chipset from Novatek too, I wonder if that has some play in the issues being encountered

Nvme or sata both need to bridge to usb standard to work with usb-out on a329 no matter what. Even Novatek NT96580 chipset on this model support sata/usb3
 
I tried to format with mac and the same problem happen. Only work for first time using, the second time a329 can’t recognize ssd

Hello! In your combination, does the power to the SSD drive come only from the cable that is connected to the camera or also from the power supply unit that is shown in your photo?

Updated and solved : after back and forth with Viofo team, they really can’t help my case much and suggest me change to portable SSD and remove the info that A329 support Enclosure on thier homepage.

Key take away to get thing done
1/ A329 have very picky with usb cable, you should buy from Viofo due to normal usb cable will high chance make signal gps noise, I have test 6 non-viofo cable from high reputation brand but only 1 xiaomi c to c cable work well, and i am not sure model ( apple iPhone 15pro c-c, belkin 100w c-c, belkin playa, belkin 60w, orico usb c, xiaomi c to c cable )

2/ A329 has low compatibility with SSD, especially SSD enclosures , should buy SSD with Viofo tested product, better just buy Samsung T7 shield.

After buy 4 enclosures to plugin 4TB samsung 990 pro, finally It ‘s work
20$ Orico with chip 9210b : fail if you cut power too fast,
40$ Jeyi with chip asm2364: fail after restart A329
25$ Lexar E6 with chip JSM: fail
40$ Asus TUF A1 with 9210b: it’s work, luckily
I can’t return 990pro due to most of local computer shop in my country dont support return after unbox. Dont test and try like me,
The very beginning reason i go with 990 pro rather than T7 shield which is 990 pro have much more lifespan and durable than T7 shield, which suppose to be on constant write dashcam, my car on the road around 4-5hour per day, draft calculate 300MB per minute write data will broke T7 shield in 1 year of driving base on techspec of T7 shield TBW 🙂)

Hope Viofo should note very clear on homepage about cable and SSD to make sure no one like me

@Zerozee ... can you look to see if the firmware version is the same between the Orico with 9210b and the Asus TUF A1 with 9210b?

The 9210b is a bridge used in enclosures and I would guess there is a FW difference between the two, as well as a VIOFO software incompatibility with some bridge FW. Just a guess.

We also have tested many different SSD enclosures, I don't think it is a camera-compatible issue, some enclosures' quality is not good, so now we removed this option on viofo.com.

We found after some months testing, some SSD enclosures didn't work, even we connected it to the computer, finally, we found it is the SSD contact issue.
After we changed the SSD enclosures, it worked again.

Have you tested other external SSD models? None of them should have issues whether it's a Crucial, Kingston, SanDisk, Samsung brand for example.

You should add description about usb cable, user should buy your cable. I believe that many people have c-c cable and dont buy Viofo ssd cable until they know that you have quite rare spec and non-standard usb IF cable.
Enclosures is tricky, remove them out of list support is good idea, or can you recommend combo of enclosures + ssd on website? Or add longer list of SSD model to compatibility list.

Add more detail of how to format 4TB ssd on windows and Mac in manual is a plus.
Overall, I am happy with my setup. 990pro + asus A1 is tough and could run under high bit rate write at lease base on Samsung spec 🙂). 4TB T7 shield only warranty for 3 yrs/, 990pro for 5 yrs/2400TBW
