The night vision potential is fantastic! The reality is not there yet.

which is what I personally want from a dashcam - information, not cinematography

Hurrah (y)(y)(y) Very well said!

Gathering information the real purpose of a dashcam, even if colors are slightly off, even if the sky looks greenish, even if the things you do not need to have shown are blurry or whatever. The whole goal here is to get as much pertinent information about the roadway, vehicles, and people as you possibly can. And preferably having it visible in the vid as-is without enhancement or use of any editing tools so that anyone viewing the vid on any platform will see the information too.

The real answer is to record 10 bit videos instead of the 8 bit H264 we currently use, that gives 4x the dynamic range without having to do any clever tricks that damage the data, while only adding 25% to the bitrate, and probably less once compressed.

Maybe not too far away now, DJI recently released their Mavic 2 with 10 bit recording and they seem to be the leaders in our video technology, maybe the leading dashcam manufacturers will implement 10 bit in a couple of years time?

I sure would like to see those big sensors in a dashcam, kick ass 4K daytime performance, and night performance with binned pixels and less resolution.
And "race" bitrate
