Hello! I’m new to the forum and was hoping to get some insight from the experts here.
I have a Thinkware ARC 900 running firmware 1.01.03 with the external radar module and Thinkware hardwiring kit.
Continuous Recording and parking mode mostly work as designed. However, while the engine is running and the camera is in Continuous Recording mode, my Valentine One V1 detects persistent K-band activity from the Thinkware radar module. The alert immediately stops when I unplug the radar module from the front camera.
I contacted Thinkware support and they initially said this was not normal:
“According to the device specifications, the RADAR module should only be active when Energy Saving Mode 2.0 Parking Mode is selected. It should not remain active or transmit while the vehicle’s engine is running.”
Based on that diagnosis, Thinkware replaced the radar module. The replacement behaves exactly the same way.
Thinkware support has now changed its position:
“Because the replacement module exhibits the exact same behavior, we can confirm the hardware itself is functioning as manufactured.”
“To clarify, this behavior would not be considered a firmware bug. The ARC 900 and radar module are operating according to their intended design, including maintaining continuous power and communication with the dash cam system. The interaction causing interference with certain third-party radar detectors is related to the way the two independent radar-based devices operate in close proximity.”
That seems inconsistent with its original statement that the module should not remain active or transmit while the engine is running.
I also have a U1000 with a radar module in another vehicle and have never experienced this behavior. There was also an older DashCamTalk discussion asking whether the U1000 radar module stops transmitting while driving: Does Radar module stop transmitting when car is started?
Has anyone else tested an ARC 900 radar module near a radar detector while the camera is in Continuous Recording mode? This seems crazy to me, why would they make their system work poorly with radar detectors?
